The Marda Loop Communities Association (MLCA) is a non-profit community association located in the Marda Loop area of Calgary. As one of the largest, most active community associations in the City, we serve the residents of South Calgary, Altadore, Garrison Woods and River Park. The MLCA offers a wide range of recreational and educational programs for all ages. We operate various facilities including a hall, outdoor pool, skating rinks, volleyball and tennis courts. The MLCA is supported by full-time and part-time staff and a dedicated group of community volunteers.


The General Manager is responsible for the successful operations and overall management of the Marda Loop Communities Association (MLCA) staff, facilities and programs. You will provide support to the MLCA Board for events and initiatives as defined in the annual strategic plan for the organization. The General Manager is the liaison between the Board, staff and community members.You will report directly to the MLCA Executive and receive direction from the President as authorized by the MLCA Board; and will perform your job responsibilities with minimal supervision.

This is a full-time role with a work schedule primarily Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however flexibility is required for some evenings and weekend activities.


You will:

  • Manage and administer the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the MLCA facilities and staff
  • Ensure that the operation of the MLCA meets the expectations of its members, Board and the City of Calgary
  • Plan, promote, organize and run existing MLCA programs; maintain program and event information in the online registration system
  • Recruit, hire and oversee program delivery staff
  • Provide oversight of the pool during the summer season in conjunction with Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association and the Pool Manager
  • Participate in operational planning to guide the Associations activities for the year
  • Develop the annual program and facility budget; work within the program and facility budget as approved by the MLCA board
  • Work alongside the MLCA bookkeeper to review monthly cash flow of the organization and budget to actual comparison
  • Assist in researching possible grant funding and prepare and submit grant applications on behalf of the MLCA, as approved by the Board
  • Respond to community members’ concerns and questions, being either in person walk-in, by email or by telephone, in a timely manner
  • Work with the MLCA Marketing Committee to update website and social media
  • Working with the Director of Facility, provide oversight of the Facility Lifecycle Plan and advise the Board on priority items for improvement
  • Manage the upkeep of the facility equipment including fridges, freezers, gas ovens, HVAC and electrical, bringing in service, repair and maintenance as required
  • Oversee upkeep of office equipment including photocopier, computers, printers and computer software updates as appropriate
  • Aid in establishing a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations

Ideally you have the following education and experience:

  • University Degree in a related field; or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • 5 or more years' progressive management experience in a voluntary sector organization or community based organization
  • Sports and recreation-related degree or equivalent experience
  • Current first aid/CPR certificate

*Please note a current police clearance with vulnerable sector check will be required for the successful hire


Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of human resources management, financial management, facility and operational management principles as they relate to non-profit/voluntary organizations
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations including: employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, charities, taxation, CPP, EI, health coverage and more
  • Proficiency in the use of computers for Word processing, desktop publishing, Excel spreadsheets, Email and internet
