Since 1928, Family Services of Greater Vancouver has been creating brighter tomorrows for people and families in our community. Last year we supported more than 13,000 people to create possibilities for themselves through professional counselling, therapy, education, advocacy, planning, employment support, and other community services. 

 

Directions Youth Services provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with entry points to access the tools, support, and guidance they need to go about making healthy, positive changes in their lives. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Directions Youth Services consists of:

 

Directions Youth Services Centre provides Vancouver’s homeless youth and youth at-risk with a range of services to assist them to access housing, and increase health, life-skills and wellbeing. DYSC also encompasses our housing, outreach and transition to adulthood programs.

Directions Youth Detox offers youth with a continuum of service, which includes outreach, drop-in and assessment counselling and referrals, in-house detoxification, education and groups.

Directions Youth Safehouse is a first stage emergency shelter to assist youth to return to family/extended family and/or access needed transitional supports to independence.

 

Job Summary

This is a 35 hrs/week position that reports to the Manager of Supported Housing and Transition programs. The Transition for Youth to Adulthood (TYA) program operates Monday- Friday with some evening and weekend work as needed. The Transition Worker provides one-to-one life skills support to young people 15-18 years old, who are making the transition to independence and/or aging out of government care. Youth are referred to this program by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services (VACFSS)

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish a trusting, non-judgmental, respectful rapport with the youth referred.
  • Work collaboratively with each young person toward planning for their immediate and long-term needs.
  • Provide holistic, individualized and some group life skills support to young people in areas such as: housing, education, employment, self-care, homemaking, nutrition and self-advocacy.
  • Work with youth in the community to explore issues relevant to their health and well- being, and organize and facilitate outreach activities that are responsive to those issues.
  • Represent Family Services of Greater Vancouver in a professional manner in the community; effectively liaise with other professionals, agencies, and members of the community.
  • Provide information and expertise on services and opportunities available to youth and actively promote client involvement in the community.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, supervision sessions, employee evaluation processes, and development workshops.
  • Ensure highest professional standards of ethics and confidentiality while providing effective advocacy when needed.
  • Continually show an ability to use initiative and function independently, and as part of a team.
  • Adhere to and maintain required reporting, statistical, and database systems.
  • Adhere to all program and agency policies and procedures.
  • Driver’s Licence and access to a vehicle is required.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor degree in Social Work or the Social Sciences
  • Minimum 3 years experience working at risk and/or homeless youth in areas such as child protection, life-skill development, community support and /or community outreach
  • Experience with youth issues involving homelessness, sexual exploitation, mental health, drug and alcohol misuse, concurrent issues, youth employment and poverty
  • Experience with MCFD and VACFSS an asset
  • Knowledge of substance misuse, adolescent development and youth mental health
  • Knowledge of the systemic issues that impact low income, marginalized youth and young people transitioning out of government care.

 

  • Knowledge of child and adult social welfare services, including education, housing, social and health resources
  • Current First Aid, CPR and Non Violent Intervention Training
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • A Driver’s Abstract is required
