In partnership with Children’s Services Aboriginal Services Office (ASO), Mahmawi-atoskiwin works alongside individuals and their families to create a Family Wellness Team.  The program is an alliance of three agencies:  Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary, Enviros and Pathways Community Service Association. Mahmawi-atoskiwin staff engage with families to address the concerns that brought them to involvement with Children’s Services. We do this by connecting children and families with Indigenous culture and ceremonies, enhancing family wellbeing and safety, and reuniting children with family or into an alternate living situation. 
The Lodge Keeper provides instrumental supports to families involved with Children’s Services (CS), working closely with Mahmawi-atoskiwin’s Family Wellness Partners to meet the needs of Indigenous families. This includes driving children to and from visits with their parents, supporting visits between children in care and their parents, providing In-home support, crisis management and assisting with implementation of program outcomes measures such as the Family Assessment Form, parenting surveys, and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. The role entails hands-on support in the home and in the community, an openness and understanding of the Indigenous culture and how to access culturally appropriate supports. The position  requires working 1-2 evenings per week (until 8:00pm) and/or Saturdays or Sundays. Work hours are required to be flexible around the needs of families. 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Engage families in services, mentoring and coaching parents during family visits, where possible actively supporting visits to move into the community 
  • Support families to meet their needs as presented in the Family Wellness plan
  • Provide transportation to and from family visits when children/youth are in care 
  • Embed ceremony and incorporate traditional ways of meeting needs, such as  meeting in Circle; having an Elder attend meetings; opening with a smudge and prayer 
  • Ensure that families have access to the Cultural Resource specialist
  • Provide crisis intervention, crisis management, safety planning and advocacy to families
  • Schedule and coordinate visits with all parties; provide updates regarding any changes
  • Record all communication with children, youth and families and other professionals
  • Create and maintain a positive, supportive and rewarding work environment
  • Work effectively with other team members and each family’s identified natural supports 
  • Work a flexible schedule including some evening and weekend work
  • Submit all financial paperwork by cut-off dates and times
Education, Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Degree or diploma in Human Services preferred or a related degree with experience
  • Possess knowledge of Children’s Services and the Family Enhancement Act
  • Previous in-home experience supporting Indigenous families is ideal; cultural sensitivity 
  • Use a trauma-informed approach to working with children, youth and families; understand normative child development and the effects of loss and grief on families  
  • Qualities essential to working with people affected by trauma (empathy, compassion, self-awareness, flexibility, good listening skills, self-care, comfort with the unknown)
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • Problem solving, organizing and analytical skills; use initiative, supportive team player.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office as well as excellent oral and written skills
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Clear security clearances
  • Use of a reliable vehicle with $2,000,000 liability, permission to carry passengers and business coverage on the vehicle
  • Valid driver’s license and a driver’s abstract with minimal demerits.
