Position Title:             Child and Youth Program Supervisor

Status:                         Full Time (30-35 Hours/Week)

Placement Date:         February 2018

Hourly Rate:               15.00 - 18.00 based on qualifications and experience

Reports To:                 Centre Manager

Hours of Work:           Daytime, Evening and Weekend shifts


Purpose and Objective

Reporting to the Director of Membership & Programs, the successful candidate will be responsible for the supervision and delivery of YMCA Physical Literacy program curriculum, drop-in programs and recreation spaces for children and youth within the YMCA of Northern BC’s Membership Centre located in Prince George. The Membership Centre provides opportunities for all members of our community to be active and reach their potential.


In this role, you will work with volunteers and staff to deliver programs. YMCA programs and services are values based and focused on encouraging all participants to reach their potential. This position requires a strong understanding of recreation programs, services, and community engagement and working with a wide variety of age groups:

  • Children and youth programs are developed within the YMCA’s national framework of Healthy Child Development and Healthy Adolescent Development. Programs are aligned with the Canadian Sport for Life Long-Term Athlete Development framework to ensure children and youth are building the appropriate skills to stay active for life.
  • Programs for teens are focused on creating safe and welcoming spaces for teens to be physically active, engage with their peers, develop leadership skills and create opportunities to have positive impact in the community.

The successful candidate will be able to relate well to children, youth and adults in a positive, caring and respectful manner.


Specific Responsibilities

The successful candidate can expect to spend approximately 80% of time in direct program delivery and support and 20% of their time on administrative tasks such as scheduling, program reports and evaluation and other duties as required.


Program delivery will be focused on a wide variety drop-in programs and services and scheduled program times

  • 70% of programming focused on 0-8 years of age.
  • 20% of programming focused on 9-12 years of age.
  • 10% of programming focused on 13-18 years of age.

Coaching and support the staff team to provide quality YMCA Recreation Services

  • Develops program staff and volunteers through coaching and side by side support.
  • Participate in direct program delivery as needed
  • Liaison to resolve challenges between staff, volunteers and participants.
  • Ensure staff development plans are followed and monitored with specific measurements of success.
  • Coordinates with Director to evaluate services on an ongoing basis, respond to emerging needs, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Report on statistics as required or requested.
  • Supports communication pieces as required

Understands supports and actively participates in YMCA philanthropic initiatives.

  • Supports the delivery of processes and strategies that will increase the depth of involvement of each YMCA participant.
  • Ensuring YMCA programs and experiences are safe.
  • Is responsible for the safety and security of members/participants.
  • Maintain current qualifications as required by this position and follow the YMCA policies and practices.
  • Attends staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required.
  • Other related duties as directed by direct supervisor or another member of the YMCA Senior Management team.


  • A combination of experience and training related to recreation services and program development and delivery including coaching certification and education in areas related to child and youth development of physical activity.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Current YMCA certification or BCRPA registration in Group Fitness, Personal Training, Individual Conditioning, and/or Aquatic Fitness is considered an asset.
  • Additional qualifications such as YMCA Trainer and/or Trainer Educator certification, Child Care Certifications, Coaching Certificates, or experience are considered an asset.
  • Current first aid and CPR certification
  • Successful experience managing and leading a team of staff and volunteer program and service leaders

Service Strategy: Ability to identify the needs and wants of members/participants as a priority and respond in an effective and timely manner to enhance every person’s YMCA Experience.

Initiative/Enthusiasm/Innovation: Ability to manage and lead to achieve and exceed identified goals.


Planning & Organizing: Ability to establish a clearly defined and effective course of action for self and others to accomplish short and long term goals.


Problem Solving: Ability to identify an issue, gathers and processes relevant information, determines possible solutions, selects appropriate responses and implements and evaluates them.


Negotiation/Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Ability to speak, write, listen and secure information in a variety of settings. Ability to cooperate with others to achieve results. Ability to create and build relationships inside and outside the organization.
