Women's Health in Women's Hands is a Community Health Centre providing primary health care to racialized women from the African, Black, Caribbean, Latin American and South Asian communities in Toronto and surrounding municipalities.  We are committed to working from an inclusive feminist, pro-choice, anti-racist, anti-oppression and multilingual participatory framework. 


WHIWH offers the following volunteer opportunity for a professional, motivated and dynamic individual to join the Centre.



The WHIWH Board as a whole requires a skill set to oversee the running of a Community Health Centre. The most important qualities we look for in Board members are commitment, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the health issues impacting the lives of racialized women from the African, Caribbean, Latin American and South Asian communities. The Board is particularly seeking women from these priority racial groups who possess any of the following skills or experience:

  • Governance of business or non-profit organizations
  • Financial and or Accounting experience
  • Legal Expertise

The successful applicant will be encouraged participate in at least one of the Board committees (Policy, Board Recruitment, Finance, Executive)


Time Commitment

Board members are elected for either two or three-year terms. They may serve on consecutive terms for up to a total 

of six years. A Board Member can expect to spend approximately 6 hours a month on board related activities.  Board members time commitments vary but typically include the following areas:

  • Preparation for and attendance at Board meetings, held the second Wednesday evening of each month
  • Participation in Board committee meetings, which occur once a month (sometimes less frequently)
  • Attendance at one day-long planning session each year
  • Attendance at the Annual General Meeting in September of each year
  • Participation in occasional Board orientation and/or development, organized to accommodate members’ schedules.



  • Contribute towards making a difference in the lives of racialized women
  • Gain useful supervisory and evaluation skills
  • Gain experience in non-profit governance
  • Contribute to Canadian health care advocacy and policy
  • Board and committee members are entitled to reimbursement for public transit or taxi fare, to and from Board or committee meetings and for the cost of childcare while attending meetings.
