Position Title:  LHION Project Coordinator

Duration: March 2018 – August 2018 (up to a maximum of 200 hours)

Rate of pay : $18/hour

Reports To: Manager, Community Programs

Hours: As needed, more per week closer to the event

Location: Lawrence Heights, Neptune, Lotherton


Lawrence Heights Inter-Organizational Network (LHION) is a neighbourhood coalition of residents, emerging groups, service providers, and other representative organizations delivering programs and services in the communities of Lawrence Heights, Lotherton Pathway, and Neptune. Valuing the lived experience of residents, LHION attempts to improve programs and services in the community and to ensure that resident voices and leadership are central to the priorities and actions of the network. The network aims to bring the communities’ residents and agencies working in these community together for community action, collaboration, and collective impact. 


As a network member, North York Community House (“NYCH”) will manage this network project. NYCH has been committed to working with individuals, groups and neighbourhoods to address the issues that are of concern to them for over 26 years. From reducing isolation for newcomers and providing support to new parents, to bringing together residents to strengthen their communities, our goal is to provide the support people need today, in order for them to succeed tomorrow.


Position Summary:


This position is responsible for leading the development and implementation of a Neighbourhood Olympic Games where local residents from the 3 communities of Lawrence Heights, Lotherton, and Neptune playfully compete in fun activities that engage new residents, build new and strong connections between residents, and promote healthy and inclusive living. This includes recruiting advisory committee members that represent resident voices to support major decisions of the project; designing various ‘games’ that are inclusive of all ages and abilities; recruiting resident ‘athletes’ and volunteers; and ensuring that all arrangements for the event (date, time, location, food, equipment) reflect the community and are organized in a timely and successful manner.


Main responsibilities

  • Plan activities with the goals of building relationships across communities and generations, encouraging healthy living, and strengthening community pride
  • Develop partnerships with businesses and other stakeholders in the community to gain support for the event
  • Engage, train and support volunteers to assist with planning and running the event
  • Organize all event logistics including equipment rental/purchase, food and beverage, health and safety, volunteer schedules, etc.)
  • Develop and implement plan to promote and outreach the event throughout the community
  • Recruit, select, and work with an advisory committee made up of residents from all 3 communities
  • Work with program manager and other LHION partners to ensure all requirements are addressed
  • Ensure all program records, receipts and files are maintained securely and submitted regularly
  • Prepare reports and budgets, as required
  • Other duties as required


Position Requirements:        




The minimum level of education is high school or in process of completing high school. Post-secondary education in community work, social services, event planning or related field, an asset


Experience and Skills

  • Excellent organizational skills - ability to keep accurate records and complete necessary documentation
  • Strong leadership skills - able to motivate and give direction to others, problem solve, and promote the event with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong creative abilities to design fun activities that involve many stakeholders
  • Initiative to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for outdoor games, athletics and/or healthy living
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Lawrence Heights communities an asset
  • Sensitive to newcomer, seniors, children, racialized and low-income community needs
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to speak a second language (Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tamil, Somali, Caribbean dialects) an asset


Other Requirements

Work schedule will be determined with supervisor based on program needs. This position will predominantly require working evenings/weekends. LHION Project Coordinator may be responsible for carrying/caring for a laptop and cell phone. This position will also require travel within the GTA.

A police reference check (including vulnerable sector screening) is required.
