Auxiliary - on Call

Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS) is an award-winning, accredited not-for-profit that has served the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley for over 30 years. Our participants are often vulnerable or marginalized from society. PCRS is committed to integrated service delivery which is people-centred, inclusive, collaborative, and evidence-based. PCRS has an annual operating budget of approximately 24 million; employs nearly 350 staff; and engages over 200 volunteers.

 

The RAW will work as part of a large team and be responsible for the emotional and special needs of youth in a substance use treatment program. The core role is to provide basic care and nurturing, set reasonable expectations and limits and to participate in supporting the achievement of identified goals for each individual participant. This requires a sound understanding of both normal and delayed or problematic development behaviours and barriers, impulsivity, attachment issues, FASD, ADHD, the effects of abuse and how this all relates to substance use.  

 

This position will also act as a positive role model for our participants and assist them in developing values of honesty, self-assertiveness, respect for others, a democratic viewpoint and achieve a lack of dependency on drugs, alcohol, and self-abusive and destructive behaviours.

 

The successful applicant will possess a strong ability to provide assessment utilizing individual and/or group counselling skills, behavior management and assist clinical staff where needed.  As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the applicant will have strong skills in teamwork, group dynamics and program planning. The successful applicant will also have experience and knowledge in the area of addictions/residential work and working with at risk youth and young adults.

                         

Academic and Job Experience Required:

B.A. in a related field plus 1 year related experience, or a Child and Youth Care Diploma plus 2 years’ experience, or a combination of related work experience/education with at-risk youth.

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal records check including the vulnerable sector
  • Driver’s license with business insurance use
  • Use of own vehicle required. Paid mileage.
  • Tuberculosis testing and immunization confirmation
  • Driver’s abstract
  • Sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills
  • Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong understanding of substance use and strategies to assist youth

             

Desired Requirements:

  • Familiarity with motivational interviewing
  • Solution focused counselling
  • Addictions counselling training
  • Mental health training
  • Sexual abuse training
  • Depression/suicide/co-occurring disorder training
  • Trauma informed practice
