Kids in the Hall Program offers a safe and supportive “go-to” place for high-risk youth. The Assistant Café Manager is one of the faces of Kids in the Hall Program and is responsible for maintaining food and beverage service levels at all times by providing professional leadership and attentiveness to detail. This team oriented individual will be actively involved in all activities related to food and beverage including staff orientation and training, inventory maintenance and all duties associated with food services. The ideal candidate will possess creativity and an obvious passion and understanding for cafe and catering operations.

In Your Role You Will

  • Develop and coordinate a service standards program for up to 40 youth annually as part of the Employee Readiness Program that aligns with the goals and objectives of the social enterprise in conjunction with the Café Manager and Director of Culinary.
  • Builds rapport and communicates with youth to provide wrap around supports to ensure expectations are met.
  • Supervises, delegates, trains and monitors task results for front of house staff and catering personnel.
  • Orientates and trains personnel in barista/beverage, cashier and floor service modules of Employee Readiness Program.
  • Ensures that the staffing schedule is adhered to by all staff and that operational needs are met.
  • Plans and refreshes the beverage menu regularly to ensure that it is reflective of local products, suppliers, availability and budgetary requirements.
  • Instructs and ensures proper transportation, handling, storage of goods and materials for catering events.
  • Ensures compliance of public health protocols, food safety standards and labor regulations with regards to equipment handling, food storage and food prepared by youth and kitchen staff.

Education and Certifications

Required

  • Pro-serve Certification (or ability to obtain certification prior to start date)
  • Food Handling Certification
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License; may require use of company registered vehicle.

Recommended

  • First Aid (CPR/AED) 

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a service professional
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a catering setting
  • Previous background as a barista, or café manager a definite asset
  • Passion for coffee, food and service excellence a must
  • Previous experience in social enterprise an asset
  • Previous leadership in small to medium food service establishment is an asset
  • Highly responsible and reliable
  • Innovative, creative and self-driven
  • Must have a strong desire to work with the public, engaging and positive attitude
  • Must possess typing and basic computer skill

Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have excellent food/beverage knowledge and willing to keep his/her knowledge up to date by being fully aware of culinary trends and practices
  • A well-developed sense of taste and smell
  • Good personal hygiene
  • Must possess leadership and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize, access problems and make prompt decisions
  • Proficient with MS Office package and cost management systems
  • Works collaboratively together with others to achieve group goals and objectives; has positive working relationships with colleagues and partners
  • Communicates respectfully with others from diverse backgrounds and from all levels while accommodating differences and upholding organizational values, policies and procedures.
  • Responds to new and innovative ideas in an effort to effectively problem solve for resolution.
