Job Description

The Program
WJS Canada Day Services provide opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities to participate in their community and enjoy a range of leisure activities. Day services are a community-based mix of employment preparation and community involvement. We offer one-on-one and group services operating from agency resources, in the home or in the community. WJS Staff ensure that high needs individuals with special health, behaviour, safety and nutrition requirements meet their health and community support appointments and that families are involved whenever possible.

 

The Position
The Community Disability Worker (Complex Needs) provides services empowering the individual to be self reliant and confident while providing advocacy services and mentorship.
***This Complex Needs position qualifies for an additional $3/hr***

Individuals in our care are coached in life and coping skills and acquire the tools they need to enjoy life.Activities and programs are both community and home based. Volunteer, health, safety education and other activities enhance quality of life and grow independence. Support includes:

Developing and maintaining self-help and self-care skills.
Developing the ability to interact with others, making one’s needs known and responding to instructions.
Community integration skills such as accessing community services.
Behavior management to help improve behaviors.
Social and recreational skills
Job search & career development skills

 

In Your Role You Will
- mentor and teach life skills including communication skills, coping with emotions and change, budgeting, household management, sexual health, boundaries and self care, relationships, self expression, social skills, coping tools, community awareness, personal safety, etc.
- promote inclusion in community activities involving artistic, educational, recreational programming and participation in the volunteer sector.
- link the client to community support services and employment coaching such as resume building or job searches.

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 3 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

 

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
Training or Experience:
- Minimum two years community rehabilitation experience as well as experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Grade 12 diploma or Diploma in Disability Studies or related Social Sciences/Human Services or specialized education and training and/or demonstrated success in relevant settings.
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare check.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license, Driver’s Abstract and proof of insurability.
- First Aid/CPR, Restrictive Procedures, Abuse Protocols, Non Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention.
- Use of common/business computer applications.
- Committed to philosophies and principles of community based living for individuals in service.
