Queen Alexandra KidSafe Site, Grandview KidSafe Site, Nightingale KidSafe Site, Thunderbird KidSafe Site, Macdonald KidSafe Site OR Cook KidSafe Site

Dates & Hours of Work:

March 19, 2018-March 29, 2018 (closed weekends and Friday March 30, 2018 for Good Friday Stat)


7:30am - 2:30pm with additional hours allocated for meal prep/shopping and clean up as outlined in your contract

Pay Rate:

$16.50 per hour




The Food Coordinator and Cook is responsible for budgeting, meal and grocery planning and preparing breakfast, lunch and snack for up to 80 elementary aged children, plus staff and volunteers for the Spring Break period.


Responsibilities and Duties



  • Coordinate the KidSafe Food Program for the KidSafe children and provide nutritious meals that adhere to Canada’s Food Guide and KidSafe’s standards.
  • Plan menus, cook, ensure timely purchase or delivery of food supplies and groceries
  • Ensure meal planning is done in advance to accommodate out-trips, allergies and special program needs or themes.
  • Ensure inventory is taken before and after for KidSafe and School equipment and materials
  • Make necessary purchases of food and equipment within assigned budget, being as cost-conscious as possible while maintaining integrity of the food program and nutritional content of meals.
  • Provide nutritional and healthy life choice education to the children.


  • Ensure proper handling and storage of food supplies for assigned kitchen and maintain health and safety standards in kitchens in accordance with Food Safe and Public Health requirements.
  • Work considerately with volunteers and staff and ensure they observe appropriate hygiene and food safety standards.
  • Familiarize yourself with the needs of the children and their allergies where necessary and maintain all necessary records (such as allergies/restrictions).
  • Provide a set menu at the beginning of week to staff team.


Close of Session

  • Carry out setup and cleanup of eating area and kitchen daily with thorough final clean on final day of session.
  • Ensure the kitchen and equipment are clean and in safe working order.
  • Ensure equipment and materials are returned to the school or KidSafe
  • Prepare and submit expense sheets on the last day of program; reconciling the expenditures to budget ensuring there is no over-spending of allocated monies.
  • Debrief with KidSafe Manager of Programming


Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Training and/or experience in operating food programs.
  • Good knowledge of food handling and safety.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of operation and care of kitchen equipment.
  • Experience working with children and youth volunteers
  • Experience working on a tight budget and the reconciliation of expenses.
  • Food Safe Certificate and Current Criminal Record Check
