Position: Canadian Mental Health Association Alberta Division Communications Specialist

The Role


This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate communications professional who is interested in strengthening Alberta’s capacity to support mentally healthy Albertans in a healthy Alberta.


Reporting to the Executive Director, this position is responsible for supporting the internal and external communications activities for CMHA, Alberta Division, with a specific focus on content-generation, planning and online activities/developments, which will be completed by working with CMHA staff, designers, and contractors to help create effective communication products. The Communications Specialist is also accountable and responsible for design management, marketing and communications reporting.


Additionally, the Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting the execution of the tactical elements of CMHA Alberta Division’s marketing and communication strategies. The Communications Specialist implements a broad spectrum of integrated communications via various channels including, but not limited to our websites, social media (Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn), print publications, and other emerging channels.


Other responsibilities of this role will be to develop online/digital strategies and content for key audiences/stakeholders, including social media, drafting, and proofreading of content for websites, ad copy, brochures, presentations, and other communication materials.




Overall Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing all official communication of the CMHA Alberta Division
  • Responsible for creating a communication plan, including a social media plan
  • Develop the processes, and drive ongoing analysis and reporting on the effectiveness of communication and marketing efforts, and recommend enhancements
  • Responsible for ensuring print, social media and web-based communication comply with CMHA National Brand Standards
  • Responsible for writing and editing (creative and business) communication
  • Lead public awareness campaigns

Print Materials

  • Manage creation, production, and dissemination of printed publications
  • Manage creation and selection of photography for print and electronic communications
  • Support the development and execution of identity and promotional materials for CMHA Alberta Division projects
  • Overseeing graphic design

Electronic/New Media

  • Manage creation and production of communications to our constituents
  • Maintain, manage and grow constituent base
  • Collaboratively manage and coordinate creation and update of web-content; responsible for content-related protocols to keep website up-to-date.
  • Provide organization-wide e-communications support as needed
  • Lead CMHA Alberta Division’s efforts to remain up-to-date and effective in electronic communications
  • Lead CMHA Alberta Division’s social media platforms
  • Manage and create social media content/editorial plan in active collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Actively engage with and build relationships with our social media community
  • Actively monitor CMHA Alberta Division’s online reputation
  • Actively monitor new and existing social media platform opportunities

Media Relations

  • Write and distribute press releases with guidance from the Executive Director
  • Create and implement marketing messages released to media
  • Maintain media archives

Other Duties

  • Manage CMHA Alberta Division’s third party events
  • Manage CMHA Alberta Division’s fund development campaigns
  • Other duties, as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field and a minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role (a combination of education and experience will be considered)
  • Experience in successfully creating, developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans
  • Experience in delivering effective, measurable communications across a range of communication channels
  • Experience in creating both online and print marketing communications materials and tracking effectiveness
  • Awareness and understanding of effective public engagement tactics and strategy
  • Experience managing social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
  • Graphic design skills and WordPress website experience considered an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Working Conditions

  • Office position; must be able to sit at a computer for several hours
  • This position will work 7.5 hours per day, four days per week, between the hours of 8 Am and 4 Pm
  • Some evenings and weekends may be required

Starting salary is $42,500 to $48,000 based on qualifications.
