Applicants must meet the Canada Summer Jobs eligibility requirements:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* for the duration of the employment (foreign students are not eligible); and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

This position will cover support marketing and communications activities, including:

  • Assisting with developing, researching, writing, and editing print magazine content on topics related to adoption.
  • Spearheading one or two key projects related to the production of our print magazine, Focus on Adoption. Project(s) will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate based on their strongest interests and skills. Possible projects include researching and writing several feature-length bylined magazine articles or special inserts about adoption topics; creating a suite of infographics, photo spreads, or ads; growing our in-house reserve of on-brand stock photos and developing an effective image management system; researching and planning the best way to produce a digital version of the magazine; or creating and implementing a plan to aggressively pursue new paying magazine advertisers and subscribers.
  • Copywriting for marketing and promotional pieces.
  • Assisting with layout and graphic design of communications material including print, online, and social media.
  • Assisting with creating and executing an online survey of the local adoption community.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks such as liasing with printers, assisting with department planning, and updating database records.


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience or education in one or more of the following areas: communications, writing or journalism, publishing, marketing.
  • Very strong skills in either writing and editing, graphic design, or both.
  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign.
  • Training and experience in multi-media communications.
  • Familiarity with web and social media applications.
  • Some familiarity with adoption and the non-profit sector is desirable.
  • Connection to the Indigenous community is considered an asset.
  • Recognizes the impact of one’s own culture on intercultural interactions and adapt to cultural differences. Has a strong understanding of one’s own culture and perspectives whilst able to accept cultural diversity and the multitude of approaches and range of ideas available. Applies learning in a manner that is respectful of and appropriate for the culture in question.
