An exciting opportunity exists for an Early Childhood Educator at Maxxine Wright Early Care & Learning Centre, a program of Atira Women's Resource Society. We offer a challenging and rewarding work environment for women passionate about the work of ending violence against women and children. Understanding the dynamics of violence against women and children and the intersectionality of oppressions within a feminist framework and being able to apply this understanding in your day-to-day practice is mandatory.


Minimum three months’ experience as an Early Childhood Educator or equivalency. Experience working with children who have/are experiencing and or have witnessed violence and abuse is a definite asset. Must adhere to a feminist analysis of violence against women and have a commitment to/understanding of anti-oppression work and the intersectionality of oppressions. Must have a well-developed analysis of the impact/legacy of colonization and assimilation and the resulting impact on First Nations, Metis and Inuit women. Must be open to working with women who are struggling with substance use and/or mental & spiritual wellness. Must understand and be comfortable working within a harm reduction framework. We are particularly interested in applications from women who reflect the women who access our services and the women who reflect the diverse population of the Lower Mainland.

Because of the demographics of Surrey, significant consideration will be given to women who meet the qualifications and who are First Nations, Metis or Inuit or who speak Punjabi or one of the languages of Surrey’s five largest refugee populations; from Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan or Bhutan. We are especially interested in applications from women who live in the community in which they will work and from women who match the demographic/age group served by the Lower Mainland.

Primary Accountabilities:

  • To plan, carry out, and assess developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that promote the well-being of each child and that respect and reflect the diverse needs of the children.
  • To individualize the curriculum and ensure that all activities are accessible;
  • To ensure the child care environment is healthy and safe for all children.
  • To ensure guidance of children's behavior that encourages positive self concept;
  • To ensure positive communication with enrolling parents/legal guardians.
  • To contribute to the ongoing operation of the centre.

An Early Childhood Educator license to practice is required. An Infant and Toddler Diploma and license to practice are an asset. Some form of relevant skill-based training is required either through community programs like those offered at the Native Education College and/or through volunteer training and experience and/or through another relevant workplace experience. Formal education/credentials will count only as much as the equivalent combination of skill-based training, work and or lived experience.

Additional Requisites:

  • A valid child oriented First Aid certificate is required
  • Food Safe Certificate is required
  • Infant/toddler Certificate an asset
  • Special Needs Certificate an asset
  • All positions are subject to a criminal records review
