Position: Spirit Lodge Support Worker

Contract: Casual On-Call


The support worker’s role is to carry out the purpose and objectives of Helping Spirit Lodge Society through the support and advancement of Aboriginal women and children fleeing violence. Ensure a commitment to provide safe and protective shelter. Maintain cohesion in the residence by: assessing critical incidents, making timely decisions and mediating when necessary. Prioritize work and carry out daily practice in an anti-oppressive, women-centred approach. Delivery of a holistic program that enhances the lives of the community we serve.

REPORTS TO: Spirit Lodge Team Lead

Core Competencies

Aboriginal Centered Service Approach:

o Demonstrate a working knowledge of, and experience with, Aboriginal peoples in Canada and work in a setting with a variety of different traditions and cultures represented and general cultural competency
o Demonstrate ability to apply theory to practice working with Aboriginal women and children
o Willingness to support Aboriginal people in determining their own future
o Experiencing Aboriginal people without judgement or stereotyping; as strong, vital and important members of community

Building Trust Relationships:

o Maintain confidentiality in respect to Helping Spirit Lodge Society and all its clientele
o Demonstrate ability to exercise non-judgement and adherence to confidentiality
o Treat people with fairness and respect independent of their status or personal disagreement
Collaborative Planning, Organising and Coordinating
o Demonstrate ability to administer the day-to-day administrative operations of the Spirit Lodge First-Stage Program and to ensure that the Executive Director is kept informed of the status of the program.
o Demonstrate ability in a leadership role and administer program budgets
o Coordinate staff training events and day-to-day operations with current policy and procedures


o Demonstrate the ability to carry out the purpose and objectives of the Helping Spirit Lodge Society and ensure a commitment to the delivery of services that provides safe and protective shelter to Aboriginal women and children
o Liaise with community and government stakeholders while developing partnerships to enhance quality services
o Demonstrate a passion and long term intent to work within the Aboriginal community
o Excellent open listening skills and commitment to continually seek understanding of the culture, protocol and communication processes of Aboriginal people

Empowering Others:

o To demonstrate appropriate human relations skills required in the workplace (decision making, leadership, working within a team and independently) as a Team Leader and role model
o Encourages staff to learn, act and lead based upon assessment of readiness
o Proactively shares resources to enhance Aboriginal empowerment
o You create and contribute towards a healthy environment where people can flourish and grow

o Demonstrated ability to administer the day-to-day administrative operations of the Spirit Lodge Second-Stage Program and to ensure that the Executive Director is kept informed of the status of the program.

o Aligns staff training and day-to-day operations with current policy and procedures

Managing Organizational Resources:

o Strong time management skills with the ability to attend to multiple deadlines
o Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records with recognition of appropriate note taking skills for client files
o To develop, implement and evaluate administrative goals, objectives, policies and procedures and ensures that the required standards and goals are met
o Implements and supports results measurement that provides relevant information to maintain funding agreements
o Creatively and effectively allocate staff resources



Carry out the purpose and objectives of the Helping Spirit Lodge Society
• Demonstrate ability to adhere to and implement organization’s principles, policies and practices, including understanding and maintaining confidentiality
• Ability to support and interact with program participants and their children in a professional manner, providing life skills to both children and women to assist the participants in reaching stability
• Demonstrate active listening and healthy boundaries
• Demonstrate the ability to integrate the guiding principle of “Best Interest of the Child” in all duties
• Ensuring the safety and comfort of residence by following security procedures and maintaining cleanliness of the living environment
• Identify needs of participant families to support them in further community integration/engagement with community referrals and capacity building to transition into permanent housing



• Post Secondary Degree
• A minimum of three years’ experience working with children of various ages
• Demonstrated familiarity with the theory and technique relevant to working with children and youth
• Experience working with families to identify and access basic needs and resources
• Knowledge of Aboriginal history, traditions and cultural competencies; ability to articulate history relating to Aboriginals in Canada
• Ability to articulate historical trauma
• Knowledge of the impacts of family violence and its effects on women and children
• Demonstrated decision making skills and ability to work independently
• Ability to identify and direct individuals experiencing trauma, mental health substance use, sexual abuse and or homelessness to appropriate resources
• Knowledge of facilitation techniques and experience in group work
• Criminal Record Check clearance
• Valid Driver’s license (vehicle an asset) must provide a driver’s abstract
• Demonstrated computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook and internet research)
• Current First Aid Certificate
• Current Food Safe Certificate
• CWWA training Early Childhood Educator Certificate an asset
