The PACT Grow-to-Learn (GTL) Program is designed to teach schools and communities about food and how it is grown. The program creates safe, experiential learning environments, and community engagement hubs in priority neighbourhoods, as well as acts as a catalyst in raising awareness of important issues related to healthy eating, nutrition, food security, environmental sustainability and hunger in our schools and local communities.

GTL is partnered with the Toronto District School Boards and our urban farms are located on school property. Currently we have three Grow to Learn sites in the GTA: Thistletown Collegiate (½ acre) in the Rexdale community; John Polanyi Collegiate (1 acre) in the Lawrence Heights Community; and Elmbank Junior Middle School (orchard) in the Rexdale Community.


Overview and Job Summary

We are hiring one Assistant Manager/Educator at our Thistletown Collegiate site, and one Assistant Manager/Educator at our John Polanyi Collegiate site. The Assistant Manager/Educator will work alongside the Site Director/Lead Educator to deliver curriculum linked workshops and programming, maintain the farm, and work with student and community volunteers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the lead educator in delivering workshops and garden programming

  • Coordinating and supervising volunteers; tracking volunteer hours

  • Volunteer outreach, recruitment and training

  • Coordinating court referrals and tracking hours

  • Implementing garden plan and planting dates

  • Coordinating farm hand staff

  • Organizing weekly harvests

  • Assist with weekly garden markets

  • Maintain other PACT garden sites as required

  • Attend monthly meetings


  • Thorough knowledge and 2+ years experience of sustainable agriculture is required

  • Working towards or completed post-secondary in education, early childhood education,

  • outdoor education, agriculture or related field is an asset

  • Knowledge of Ontario’s native species

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C” an asset

  • Has the ability to comfortably lift 50lbs


  • Facilitating workshops and programming for grades 1 - grade 12

  • Training and managing staff and volunteers

  • Experience working with community related programs

  • Community outreach and volunteer recruitment

Other requirements

  • A Police Background Check is required and paid for by PACT

  • A genuine passion for environmental education is a must

Wage, Hours and start date

This is an independent contractor position. The contract runs from April 2nd, 2018 to October 26th, 2018, with potential for renewal in 2019. Full time (40 hours per week) at a rate of $16-$17 per hour based on experience.
