Senior Human Resources Officer

Position Overview

The Pembina Institute seeks a highly motivated individual to join its Calgary team as an Senior Human Resources Officer, who will build and manage the HR strategy and HR functions of the Pembina Institute. This role will be focused on day-to-day HR functions such as recruiting, on/off boarding, and reviewing benefits and compensation, as well as leading and implementing projects such as crafting a new set of internal policies and procedures. You will also be a leader of Pembina Institute culture.

We’re looking for a person who is excited about the environmental movement in Canada, and has experience working with the non-profit sector. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, excited about building the Institute’s HR function, and eager to get involved in the details. We are looking for someone who can provide our organization with thoughtful HR policies and practices and who understands the importance of recruiting and retaining top talent. We’re looking for a problem-solver who can resolve personnel issues, as well as someone who manages and advises on all aspects of HR. We look forward to your leadership in best practices for recruitment, organizational development and performance management.  

This role will require regular engagement with all staff in all departments in our offices in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary rate is competitive for a Senior Human Resources Officer in the environmental non-profit sector and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and enforce organization-wide HR policies
  • Ensure the Institute’s policies and practices meet local employment standards
  • Manage the recruiting process from end to end, including creating and updating job descriptions and postings, conducting screening interviews, scheduling interviews, and checking references
  • Lead on-boarding of new employees, interns and volunteers to ensure all new employees understand benefits, policies and expectations, and complete all necessary paperwork
  • Coordinate with the IT department to set up technology for new employees
  • Lead off-boarding of employees: ensure those leaving the organization receive all final benefits, complete necessary paperwork and conduct exit interviews
  • Lead annual review and half-year check-in of all employees, ensuring managers and individual contributors understand their roles and requirements in the process
  • Track and benchmark compensation data to maintain salary grid
  • Collaborate with the finance department accountants to ensure payroll is accurate
  • Maintain confidential staff and professional development files and plans
  • Identify training needs and programs for managers and individual contributors

This position is located in our Calgary office and reports to the Operations Manager. It is full time (40 hours a week) will require some travel and may require occasional work on weekends and evenings.

Skills and Qualifications

Candidates must clearly reflect the following skills and experience in their application:

  • A degree or certificate in Human Resources (such as CHRP), or cumulative relevant experience
  • 5+ years experience in Human Resources, preferably in the non-profit or charitable field
  • Excellent people skills: empathetic, calm and good-natured, a good listener, and able to work with a wide array of personalities
  • Excellent knowledge of human resources best practices, including policy building and federal and provincial employment laws
  • Experience in hiring new employees, including creating and posting job descriptions, vetting resumes, managing interviews, and guiding managers on the selection process
  • Experience in off-boarding employees, including conducting exit interviews and providing necessary paperwork and benefits
  • Strong ability to guide and advise employees on how to navigate internal conflicts, and to mediate disagreements where necessary
  • Demonstrated experience with performance management systems
  • A passion for the environment or social change through educational, professional, and/or volunteer experiences
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Proficient with Microsoft office

Other Valuable Qualifications

  • Experience implementing and using an HRIS system
  • Experience with change management and project management, particularly for implementing new HR policies and or organizational development projects
  • Developing, measuring and reporting on HR key performance indicators
