Parks and Recreation Ontario is a non-profit association that advances the health, social and environmental benefits of quality recreation and parks through evidence-based practices, resources and collaborative partnerships.


Position Summary


Reporting to the Director, Public Policy and Communications, the Coordinator supports PRO’s public policy and advocacy efforts and the organization’s overall communications through all channels to members and stakeholders. The Coordinator will research and prepare government submissions and advocacy position papers, and coordinate issues management and government relations. The Coordinator plays an active role in preparing and editing publications, newsletters and monitoring and moderating communications on a daily basis through PRO’s email communications and social media. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for coordinating the Green Jobs Initiative.


Position Responsibilities


Government Relations and Advocacy

  • Coordinate and support the implementation of the organization’s government relations and advocacy program in Ontario;
  • Identify opportunities to further PRO’s advocacy plan by analyzing government policies, reports, and legislative initiatives, and monitoring other relevant current events;
  • Research and write accurate, high-quality briefing documents to summarize developments in provincial government programs, policy, and legislation;
  • Provide support in developing and managing key relationships with elected officials, political staff, bureaucrats, and other sector partners;
  • Research, draft and coordinate correspondence, presentations, formal policy submissions and related materials to elected and non-elected government officials;
  • Create and edit public-facing advocacy content and materials for the organization;
  • Work with external government relations and/or public affairs consultants as identified;
  • Participate in key government and stakeholder meetings as required; and
  • Participate on committees and working groups as required.


  • Collaborate with the Director, Public Policy and Communications and staff to develop communications strategies that will broaden the reach and deepen the impact of PRO activities;
  • Prepare content for PRO membership communications;
  • Support PRO’s social media activities;
  • Assist in preparation of reports and presentation materials;
  • Proofread and edit reports as needed; and
  • Manage content of all PRO’s websites.


Green Jobs Initiative

  • Develop and implement a communications plan to promote the program including web content, social media and other types of engagement;
  • Work directly with communities wishing to apply to the program; and
  • Prepare reports on results/activities.


Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary degree in communications, public policy, political science or other related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in policy development, advocacy work, and/or non-profit communications.
  • Knowledge of recreation sector.
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinking, research and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the workings of provincial and municipal governments.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to learn about new issues.


Salary: Commensurate with experience. Please ensure to include salary expectations with submission.
