ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES

Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to at-risk, homeless, and street-involved youth under 25. Vancouver’s most vulnerable youth can connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions operate several facilities and programs for youth throughout Vancouver.

 

Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing all kinds of life’s challenges.

 

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Youth Detox Manager, the Assistant Manager helps plan, develop, implement, and oversee the day-to day operations of the Youth Detox program. In addition, the Assistant Manager is responsible for ongoing supervision of staff including selection, performance management, discipline and dismissal. The Assistant Manager works in conjunction with management to develop and meet program and organizational goals.

Hours of Work: 35h a week. Sunday to Thursdays, hours negotiable.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assumes responsibility of operations when the Manager of Youth Detox is offsite
  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of the program by ensuring the necessary facilities and equipment are in place, program guidelines and polices are adhered to and program standards are met.
  • Plans, formulates, implements, and evaluates residence goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Reviews and evaluates client progress, makes adjustments to service plans as required and provides follow up planning.
  • Identifies both physical and program needs of youth
  • Maintains written client records and statistics
  • Coordinates the shopping and the purchasing required for the program
  • Creates monthly staffing schedules and coordinates schedule updates
  • Provides on-floor support when required
  • Performs other related duties as required
  • Will assist the Manager of Youth Detox with the following tasks:
    • Supervise and evaluate staff and monitor daily operations by performing duties such as assigning work, providing feedback on performance, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Hires staff, orients new staff and manages disciplinary matters up to and including dismissal
  • Identifies the needs of staff for professional development
  • Orients and provides training to volunteers and practicum students
  • Monitor program budgets and expenditures
  • Provides guidance, training and orientation on policies, procedures, report preparation or other matters arising in the program
  • Plan and implement program activities and special events

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related human / social service field required.
  • First Aid, FoodSafe level 1, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates are assets

 

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years recent related experience
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience.
  • Training or experience in addictions and youth work.
  • Experience with Case Management
  • Knowledge of mental illness  
  • Thorough knowledge of adolescent development, at-risk youth and the child welfare system
  • Excellent organizational, time management, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
