Employment Opportunity - Director, Information and Referral Services

Title: Director Information and Referral Services
Reports to: Executive Director

General Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Information and Referral is responsible for the operation of the Information and Referral program of the St. Albert Community Information and Volunteer Centre.


The Director of Information and Referral, with the assistance from the Executive Director will act to ensure that all the service aspects within the program are carried out according to established policies and procedures.

Areas of Responsibility:

Information and Referral

  • Maintain an up-to-date and accurate resource database www.informalberta on community resources and service providers.
  • Ensures clients receive accurate information and referrals to appropriate agencies or services.
  • Ensures that all matters pertaining to clients are treated in a professional and confidential matter.
  • Updating and compiling the community resource listings, such as the apartment rental list, snow removal services, etc.
  • Develops procedures for the Information and Referral program.
  • Supervises the day-to-day operation of the Information and Referral program.
  • Managing / organizing / updating inventory of resource library / pamphlets.

I & R Program Volunteers

  • Ensures that Information and Referral volunteers are screened, selected, oriented and trained.
  • Manages performance, supervision, evaluation and termination of volunteers in the Information and Referral program.
  • Ensures that Information and Referral volunteers receive ongoing and in-service training.
  • Ensures that Information and Referral volunteers are scheduled to provide adequate coverage to deliver services.
  • Maintains individual volunteer personnel files for the Information and Referral program.

I & R Administration

  • Ensures an effective and efficient office management system for I & R area.
  • Submits reports and statistics as required by the Executive Director and Community Information and Volunteer Centre Board of Directors.
  • Evaluates the Information and Referral program as required by the Executive Director.
  • Develops and reviews yearly program goals and objectives in consultation with the Executive Director.
  • Assists with the organization and compiling of promotional material for special events as required.

Community Liaison

  • Maintain contact and liaise with community agencies and businesses as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Promotes Information and Referral program as needs dictate.
  • Represents the Community Information and Volunteer Centre as required.
  • Maintains contact with Provincial and other Information and Referral networks.
  • Represents the program at fundraising presentations as required by the Executive Director.
  • Assists, promotes, fundraises and ensures accurate financial support to other community special events as required.

CIVC Support

  • Supports CIVC as required.
  • Assists with CIVC events, promotions and fundraising presentations at the discretion of the Executive Director.
  • Provides support in the areas of reception, information and referral, volunteer services and Sidekicks Mentoring as circumstances require and time allows.
  • Plans and assists in preparation and implementation of special events.

Skills, Abilities and Attributes

  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience in volunteer management an asset.
  • Have a positive attitude, be objective and tactful.
  • Must be detail oriented and accurate.
  • Ability to work independently, requiring minimal supervision.
  • Have a strong team approach, handle a variety of tasks and possess good time management skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, self-motivation, perception, and initiative.
  • Ability to maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with other staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and community agencies and maintain good public relations.
  • Able to relate effectively with a variety of people.


  • Minimum 2 years experience in the non-profit sector, management, or other related or comparable work experience.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.


  • Certified Information Referral Specialist (CIRS) Designation, or willingness to obtain.
  • Strong knowledge of St. Albert and surrounding area.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms, graphic design and publishing.
  • Working knowledge of icarol and similar programs.


  • This position earns $45,000 – $49,999 /yr, commensurate with experience.
  • Employees are eligible for a comprehensive benefit package after a probationary period.
