Board Member - Treasurer

Status: Volunteer (~ 25-35 hrs/annum)

The National Institute of Families Foundation for Child & Youth Mental Health (operating under the name of FamilySmart®), is a Not-for-Profit organization, and Charity, who’s not just about Families.  FamilySmart® is Together-Centredand sees young people, families and professionals as assets.  It means their experience, expertise, and contributions are acknowledged, respected and valued.  Our organization is made up predominantly of people with lived experience, and focuses on practice, both personal and professional as we apply FamilySmart® Practice to all our projects, programs and services.  Why?  Because we know experiences between people matter and they improve mental health outcomes.


Position Summary

The Institute of Families is looking for a Board Member with a background in financial management, who would be willing to serve on the Board Executive as Treasurer. Terms for all Board members are 3 years, renewable.  Most of our meetings are virtual, dial-in meetings, and we also have an annual 1-day Board retreat which typically takes place in the fall, in conjunction with our AGM, in Vancouver. Specifically, we are looking for someone who has a background in accounting or finance in the NPO sector, who can provide some additional financial oversight and expertise to our Board.


The Institute’s finances are in good shape and the day-to-day financial matters are overseen by a Finance Director, with whom the Treasurer will work.  The Board Treasurer, like other Board Executive positions, is a two-year (renewable) term position, and will likely be filled by a CPA who has a strong interest and connection to child and youth mental health.


What You'll Do at Our Organization

As a Director-at-Large, you will:

  • Prepare for and attend (virtually) quarterly Board meetings, or on such other time frame as may be determined;
  • Prepare for and attend (in-person), AGM/Board Retreat;
  • Take an active role in Society governance, including, but not limited to agreeing to serve on one or more Board committees which will require a further time commitment;
  • Help to identify funding sources the Institute could pursue and, where possible, assist in making those connections;
  • Identify potential problems or risks, and help to identify solutions;
  • Protect the image of the Society and promote its value to others.


As Treasurer on the Board Executive, you will further:

  • Provide financial stewardship, ensuring the organization is financially secure, and that it has the financial resources it requires;
  • Oversee the financial books and records of the Society, ensuring systems are responsibly managed, and appropriate to ensure financial integrity;
  • Present, or prepare someone else to present, financial reports to the Board;
  • Identify potential financial problems or risks, and help to identify solutions;
  • Review information and/or respond to requests from the Auditors;
  • May also be required to sign legal documents.


Things we’ll love about you

  • You are a designated CPA in good standing;
  • You have experience working in a financial capacity in the Non-profit sector, and are familiar with CRA requirements as they relate to Charities, and BC Society Act requirements as they relate to Not-for-Profit Societies;
  • You have experience managing investments
  • You have a keen desire to serve on a Board, if you haven’t already served on one;
  • You have a connection to child and youth mental health;
  • You can adhere to a code of ethics and confidentiality requirements;
  • You’ve been wondering… “how can I make a difference?”
