The Alma Mater Society of UBC is a non-profit organization that is committed to serving the student body of UBC. Our mission statement is to improve the quality of the educational, social, and personal lives of the students of UBC Vancouver . We operate out of a beautiful 250,000 square foot facility known as the student NEST, located right in the heart of the Point Grey Campus. We run 9 food establishments and a Conferences & Catering operation, which generate revenue to support our student programs and initiatives.


We’re recruiting for a full-time Sous Chef to help secure the operational and financial success of our food and beverage operations. The Sous Chef will have the overall responsibility for the day-to-day catering operation. They lead by example, ensuring that team members uphold AMS standards from preparing and executing menus, to following health, food and safety guidelines. The Sous Chef also applies some creativity in crafting dishes that satisfy the cravings of our customers.

The Duties and Responsibilities of the Sous Chef are:

  • Provide an excellent and noteworthy dining experience for our guests
  • Ensuring for all areas that targets of food quality, food safety, food cost management and staff training in food handling and knowledge, are met
  • Working closely with the Outlet Manager & Chef de Cuisine to ensure the operational success of the department
  • Manage the human resources needs of the kitchen including the hiring, training and evaluation of staff
  • Ordering and preparing goods as needed to meet the expected business volumes
  • Executing orders in a timely manner to meet or exceed guest expectations
  • Promoting long term sustainability by reducing food waste
  • Ensuring ongoing safe operation of appliances, equipment and tools (WHIMIS)
  • Shift work (daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays), on call
  • Working action food stations for catered events as required
  • Other duties as required

The ideal Sous Chef would have these qualifications and experience:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a high volume restaurant setting
  • Previous supervisory experience in a kitchen setting
  • Minimum Food Safe level 1 certification or higher
  • Excellent customer services skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with little supervision
  • Ability to life up to 12kg (26.4lbs)
  • Good verbal and written English skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills – people focused
  • Experience working with young adults and students an asset
