Ideally you bring extensive knowledge of issues facing inner city families and children. A degree / in process in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, other social service focused degree or a strong background of work / on the job training.


As the community Schools Team programmer you lead a small team of dedicated staff and volunteers to provide Monday - Friday after school programming at one Inner City School.  This program operates daily from 3:00 - 6:00 pm and you will have up to 25 kids per day attending.  programming duties include planning and preparation for all aspects of this position - snack, recreation, social / emotional learning, out trips to local activities in the community, leadership of the team. report writing as needed seasonally and other ongoing day to day tasks.  

This position offers 35 hours per week of employment - depending on the school holiday closures, pro d days, etc.

Job Description:

An exciting opportunity to support vulnerable elementary and secondary students after school with the Vancouver Board of Education. Our large, urban and multicultural school district provides programs to over 50,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and over 2,000 adults in adult education programs. Serving our diverse district in 110 facility sites, our programs and services are designed to address both complex challenges and extraordinary opportunities.

You report to and work closely with the Community Schools Coordinator to ensure that the program is implemented in a physically and emotionally safe environment and aligns with the program goals. Your effective communication and organizational skills will assist the Community Schools Team to provide excellent service to students in the community.


  • Provide vulnerable children with after-school programming that includes a safe and structured environment, academic support, healthy physical activity, skill-building activities such as cooking and arts, and healthy snacks.
  • Program planning, program promotion, registration, supervision of children,
  • Food procurement and preparation,
  • Liaise directly with high school students, providing them with training and volunteer placements in CST programs,
  • Liaise with school staff, parents, and other community partners in the development and implementation of programs,
  • Assists in the design of program evaluation methods to ensure that programs meet the needs of the community and ministry funding criteria



  • Degree or diploma in any of the following areas: Child and Youth Care, Recreation Leadership, Human Kinetics, Community Development, Social Work or Social Sciences, Education, and/or equivalent work experience
  • Experience / understanding working with vulnerable / Inner City children and families
  • Minimum 1-year experience working with vulnerable children in a recreational setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in team leadership
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated proficiency in responding to challenging behaviours
  • Current first aid and CPR certification or willing to obtain
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development and/or QUEST2 certification or willing to obtain

The job is approximately 35 hours per week during the school year. Commencement of employment is conditional upon a successful criminal records check ($28 fee).


This position offers an hourly wage of $16.83 to $22.26 (+ 10.67% in lieu of benefits) depending on experience.
