The Domestic Violence Intervention Program increases the parenting capacity and overall safety of Ministry referred families where domestic violence is identified, decreasing the potential of their children entering the care of the Ministry. Culturally agile services and supports are required to promote family wellness and support family transitions, including reunifications. This will be addressed by providing one-to-one and group mandated service directly to perpetrators of domestic violence who are parents/caregivers of children birth -19 and have perpetrated incidents of domestic violence that have resulted in MCFD child protection services as required by the Child, Family and Community Service Act (CFCSA). Services will be available on an outreach basis where required.


The Clinical Counsellor will provide clinical counselling and engage perpetrators of domestic violence through the use of therapeutic intervention, education, including The Caring Dad’s Program and Mentor program providing them with tools that will support them in ending their abusive behaviour towards their intimate partners





  • Conduct risk assessments and safety plans, in collaboration with the family, MCFD staff and other involved community partners; including participation in Integrated Case management meetings relevant to referred individuals and families, including transition and discharge planning.
  • Administer assessments to determine client concerns, problems and case outcomes. Specifying case outcomes early and concretely.
  • Complete necessary training of DVIP group curriculum material with a level of competency to provide the different group(s) in all stages of a participant’s enrolment.
  • Provide individual and group counselling, implementing intervention strategies consistent with client information and goals. Work in collaboration with client, MCFD and community partners to establish goals that are relevant, clear and concrete using a trauma informed approach.
  • Develop and implement therapeutic service plans and programs necessary to meet client goals and objectives; utilizing a crisis intervention approach where necessary.
  • Engage in individual and DVIP team clinical supervision.
  • May maintain a caseload of clients.
  • Maintain client and service records in accordance with MCFD requirements, COA standards and agency policy.
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of community resources and provide appropriate referrals to clients to meet their needs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of counselling modalities, best practices in relation to the target population, culturally agile service provision, trauma informed interventions and practice.
  • Provide statistical and/or narrative reports on services.
  • Participate in agency and program specific quality improvement initiatives.
  • Express a willingness to learn more about, and show respect for, the clients’ worldview, belief systems and means of problem solving in order to collaboratively develop and sustain culturally sensitive and agile interventions.


Education, Training, and Experience

  • Must possess a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or related degree. Eligibility for registration with a professional body (RCC preferred).
  • Must possess specialized training and experience in delivering trauma informed services.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of family therapy; expressive therapies; group processes/group work; cognitive behaviour therapy; attachment theory; child and family development; trauma informed service, and an advanced understanding of multi-generational trauma and cycles of abuse.
  • Experience delivering services that are culturally safe and responsive to the unique context and challenges facing Aboriginal children, youth, Families and communities including the impact of colonialism and its ongoing impact.
  • Experience with people with disabilities; Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgendered, Queer (LGBTQ).
  • Experience with mental health issues.
  • Experience with problematic substance use.
  • Awareness and understanding of the key roles that a person’s culture, identity, ethnicity, race, gender and other aspects of diversity play in the counselling and support process.
  • Relevant prior experience working effectively and collaboratively with MCFD, other government agencies, and local community partners in the delivery of integrated services to families.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to an appropriately insured personal vehicle for work purposes.
  • Awareness and understanding of the key roles that a person’s culture, identity, ethnicity, race, gender and other aspects of diversity play in the counselling and support process.

  • Must complete a six (6) month probationary period before staff are permanent employees, unless otherwise specified by contract conditions.
  • Crisis Line experience an asset.
