Outcome of the Roots and Wings interventions are that families improve their level of functioning as demonstrated through resiliency growth. Caregivers provide a safe, supportive environment for their children, reducing risk factors and enhancing family protective factors, which will improve their child’s learning potential. Caregivers improve connection to each other, their extended family and peer supports, work places, and their communities. Caregivers become positive actors within their school and community, encouraging children in school attendance, academic achievement, and social and community involvement. Children in families see themselves as having potential for future success; and demonstrate a reduction in high risk behaviors, and increase in positive behaviors and development of positive goals. The position reports to the Manager of Community Initiatives at The Family Centre.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree in Social Work or equivalent education and experience
• 2 years’ experience working with families and children
• Ability to work in an integrated partnerships with schools and/or OBSD team environment
• Eligibility for membership in a professional organization
• Effective communication skills with a wide range of individuals.
• Ability to work in an integrated service team
• Knowledge of community resources
• Computer Literacy
• Caseload management skills (formal and informal)
• Police Criminal Record Check and Child and Youth Information Systems Check (must have to start employment and renewed every 3 years)
• Enhanced Police Intervention Check approved through Edmonton Police Services
• Standard First Aide-16 Hours and Suicide Intervention Training-14 Hours (must have within 3 months of employment and refreshed every 3 years)
• Aboriginal Awareness (8 hours within the first twelve months of employment and every year thereafter)

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Roots and Wings Worker maintain a caseload of 8 to 10 at a time, with who they will provide intentional therapeutic work to address complex issues.

We work with caregivers to help them create wholesome family environments.
• Provide in-home family support
• Teach parenting skills
• Improve communication skills between caregivers and caregiver/child
• Provide emotional support
• Assist isolated caregivers in developing positive peer relationships
• Address issues that are interfering with positive parenting, such as addictions, domestic violence, etc.
• Assist caregivers with overcoming barriers related to poverty: food/nutrition, medical/dental care, housing, personal identification, furniture, clothing, etc.

We work with children and youth to help them acquire developmental strengths.
• Foster developmental strengths through positive adult relationships (caregivers, teacher, community member, sports coach, school custodian, mentor, etc.)
• Support caregivers to build on their child’s strengths, needs and interests
• Assist caregivers with accessing therapeutic assistance for children who have experienced trauma, stress, abuse, neglect, etc.

We work with school personnel to build effective, safe, nurturing environments.
• Build a bridge between school and caregivers
• Promote attendance at parent/teacher interview
• Attend, alongside caregiver, school events that request parent involvement
• Assist caregiver with developing an interest in and establishing a process to engage in their child’s learning at school (homework time, school attendance, etc.)
• Assist school administration with developing a school that is welcoming and strength based place for all students and their families

We work with community actors to build safe and caring neighborhoods.
• Link families to community supports and resources
• Support and advocate for the caregiver when they are learning how to navigate through systems
• Encourage caregivers to get to know their community and get involved in making/keeping it a safe and caring neighborhood (Neighborhood Watch, Crime Councils, Revitalization Committee, etc.)
