The JVS Employment Source Markham office, funded by MAESD, provides a range of employment services (information and referral, one-on-one employment counselling, employment workshops, job development/placement services) to unemployed individuals of all ages, financial backgrounds and skills to help them gain employment within their field or a related field.


This is a full-time, one-year contract with a possibility of renewal, starting April 1st 2018.




The individual in this position will:

  • Provide individual employment counselling and facilitate employment workshops in the office and in the community
  • Assess client needs and develop service plans that demonstrate the coordination of appropriate interventions to support employment goals
  • Interview and assess clients for the appropriateness of the Markham programs including Employment Service and Youth Job Link (YJL). Collaborate with WFS team on connecting clients with employers and administering employment supports
  • Demonstrate an outcome-focused case management ability; promoting Employment Ontario Services, and identifying and supporting opportunities for itinerant services in the community
  • Maintain complete client case files in compliance with the Employment Ontario model requirements; monitor clients’ progress with ongoing follow-up
  • Apply knowledge of current local labour market trends, community services and resources across the GTA and specifically in the Markham community
  • Assist participants with the use of computers, the Internet, social media and other tools for further career training and job search
  • Provide clients with information and referral services, and administer and discussion Second Career applications
  • Have working knowledge of the EOIS CAMs and Salesforce systems

Please note that flexible hours/evenings/ weekends may be required.




You are a graduate of a recognized university, ideally in Social Work, Education or a related subject and have 1-2 years of related experience. Certification from a Career and Work Counsellor Program would be an asset, as would certification from an institution such as VRA Canada or ICCI. Your background includes demonstrated problem-solving skills, strong command of the English language, sensitivity to diversity, and the ability to deal effectively with many personality types. You possess knowledge of the local community. A Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required for this position. A second language reflecting the clients in the community such as French, Tamil, Cantonese and/or Mandarin would be a definite asset.
