The ideal candidate for Senior Manager of Finance is a seasoned senior level manager who has a wealth of experience in non-profit fund accounting with an emphasis on managing numerous federal and provincially funded contracts as well as comprehensive comptroller duties.

 

This is a great opportunity to be a key support to the Chief Executive Officer of this not-for-profit. You enjoy multi-tasking and rolling up your sleeves and getting the routine work done along with supporting and making high level decision.

 

You will be responsible for planning, organizing and evaluating the financial operations including developing goals and objectives, implementing policies and procedures in keeping with vision, values and strategic plans. Lead process to develop the annual budget for the organization, funding proposals and key performance indicators.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Overall management of the controllership for the Societies’ operations, ensuring financial systems are robust and procedures are compliant to support the Societies’ goals and purpose;
  • Ensures records of all financial transactions are in accordance with organization policy, financial reporting regulations, statutory requirements, government regulations, and collective agreements for unionized staff, as applicable. Manages the timely, accurate and complete reconciliation of all financial information and account balances, including supervision of the work of any subordinates;
  • Provides interpretation and analysis of financial results to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors to assist in the ongoing management and success of the organization;
  • Improves internal controls by developing, implementing, maintaining and ensuring compliance with sound accounting and other business policies and procedures;
  • Continuously conducts quality assessment of the underlying financial and operational processes and implement improvements;
  • Ownership for internal and external reporting including preparing and analyzing financial statements but as importantly, be the ambassador of our organization to the funder through excellent customer service;
  • Leads annual audit preparation, including providing assistance to external auditors with working papers, analyses and reconciliations;
  • Leads, mentors and develops the 4.5 FTE finance team as appropriate;
  • Leads the preparation of annual budgets with input from the Chief Executive Officer to ensure that budgets reflect historical approved spending, approved staffing plans, funding agency service requirements, organizational policies and statutory requirements. Develops and recommends the annual organization budget and area budget. Manages the budget on a day-to-day basis and prepares monthly and annual financial statements with variance evaluation for the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors;
  • Provides support and advice, as appropriate, to all departments on contract maximizations to ensure the organization receives the maximum sum of funding across all programs;
  • Maintains financial information systems to maximize efficiency effectiveness by performing system audits and investigating and resolving anomalies;
  • Ensures tax compliance for the organization by performing duties such as completion and filing of GST returns and rebates and filing of annual charity returns, Gaming Report and Exemption for Property Taxes;
  • Provides direction to responsible staff in regard to the timely collection of accounts receivables, especially with regards to fee-based programs;
  • As part of our senior management team, attends regular meetings and serves on committees as required. Works collaboratively across the organization with peers, direct reports and executive team;
  • Implements a quality assurance program within the department to ensure services are provided in the most efficient and effective way. Duties include maintaining standards set out by the strategic plan of the department and standards set by Accreditation bodies. Reviews services provided by the department, identifies areas of improvement, and initiates appropriate action;
  • Prepares Policies/Procedures for the Finance Department to reflect current standards and principles and ensures ongoing review and updating of updating of these policies;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

              

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business;
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA and/or legacy designations of CA, CMA, CGA) required;
  • 10+ years of recent, advanced Canadian accounting experience preferably in the social services non-profit sector ($10M operating budget) and with federal government funding contract experience;
  • Experience with managing high-volume contracting environment (30+ contracts), fund accounting and government financial contract management is preferred;
  • Solid knowledge in full cycle financial accounting and reporting;
  • Able to maintain internal controls;
  • Advanced experience with contract management and maximization of budgets;
  • Advanced Experience with budgeting;
  • Successful in mentoring junior staff;
  • Advanced Excel and Accpac skills as well as experience in Sage CRM;
  • Professional with strong decision making, negotiating and communication skills;
  • A natural leader with strong desire to lead, exudes confidence and professionalism and commands respect throughout organization through relationship cultivation, a deep desire to support program areas and desire to grow with the organization;
  • Curious and inquisitive with a desire to fully understand the needs of the organization beyond jut the financials.
