Summary of Responsibilities


Under the supervision of the Coordinator, the Facilitator/Counsellor facilitates and manages a weekly Parents Forever support group and provides outreach support and counselling services to parents/caregivers who are adversely affected by their adult child’s use of alcohol and drugs. The Facilitator/Counsellor works with parents/caregivers when they are in crisis and provides counselling support to parents on an as-needed basis. They are responsible for the quality assurance of the program and ensure that “best practices” are met and maintained.



  • Facilitates a weekly support group for parents of adult children with addiction and mental health issues.
  • Provides intake, orientation, outreach support and counselling services to parents/caregivers.
  • Fosters a warm, supportive, and confidential atmosphere for participants.
  • Participates in the development of educational material for the program
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of community resources to meet participants’ needs.
  • Maintains up to date records on the group and individuals receiving counselling. Completes all required documentation.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the program.
  • Provides progress reports to the Coordinator and ensures that all program and client records, are accurate, maintained and completed in conformance with the organization’s funder’s and accreditation standards
  • Safe guards participants’ rights, including confidentiality.
  • Connects with key community partners involved with families
  • Provides liaison, education and advocacy to other professionals, other agencies and the community.
  • Participates in Parents Together team meetings to consult, share information and expertise and best practice.
  • Participates in staff training sessions and relevant education opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


  • Clean Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
  • A degree (BA) in counselling, social work or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of the Parents Together Program.
  • Experienced facilitating groups, understanding group dynamics and problem solving.
  • Knowledge of intervention strategies and community resources related to Substance Abuse, Suicide Prevention, Children & Youth Abuse and Neglect, etc.
  • Good organization, time and general management skills.
  • Well-developed verbal communication skills.

This is a part time position involving evening work. Hours are yet to be determined but will be between 7 and 10 hours a week.
