Reading Tent Description:

Two Reading Tent Coordinators work together to plan and facilitate a series of outdoor sessions for children between ages 5 – 12. Reading Tents aim to reduce the loss of knowledge/skills between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next. Focusing on literacy in a broad sense (reading, writing, listening, and storytelling), the coordinators engage children in fun and inclusive activities based on diverse learning styles and reading levels.

Reading Tent sessions involve using environmental and social justice themes to engage learners in crafts, reading circles, and movement-based activities, and end with participants selecting a free book to take home!

  • Outreach to children’s programs and events in predominantly under-served and high-need communities in the Lower Mainland;
  • Schedule and coordinate Reading Tent times and locations;
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers.

Reading Tent Coordinators have:

  • Energetic, creative, inclusive, and flexible attitudes;

  • Respectful communication with kids and adults, and strong intercultural awareness;
  • An interest in children’s programming, social work, and inclusive education;
  • The desire to work and play outside all summer;
  • A valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle.
