Explanation of Role: The Experience Ontario program provides recent high school graduates and Grade 12 students, who are uncertain of which post-secondary path to take, with career and education guidance and short (1 to 3 day) career exploration experiences (ex. job shadowing, information interviews, etc.) to explore options and clarify career goals.

Reporting to: Program Coordinator/Career Coach

 

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

Bilingual Career and Postsecondary Education Coaching

  • Conducts intake sessions with Grade 12 students and recent high school graduates
  • Provides one-to-one career coaching and mentorship to help participants develop an individualized career and postsecondary exploration plan that includes job shadowing experience, postsecondary exploration and other appropriate activities
  • Facilitates regular workshops on career development; personal growth and development; how to transition successfully to post-secondary education, etc.
  • Administers interest inventories and career assessments to assist participants in career and postsecondary planning
  • Develops workshop content, materials and handouts in French
  • Arranges for each participant to attend a 1-day career exploration conference and provides support at this conference
  • Arranges for each participant to visit a postsecondary school campus or apprenticeship training centre to meet with campus staff and participate in campus tours of available resources
  • Assists participants to explore postsecondary education and apprenticeship opportunities, including assistance with financial supports (OSAP) and coordination of fees related to postsecondary applications
  • Assists participants to complete post-secondary applications
  • Develops and maintains accurate documentation of participant program plans and objectives
  • Liaises with high school guidance counsellors and teachers as required

Coordinates Short Career Exploration Experiences

  • Coordinates and conducts marketing and outreach activities to employers of various sectors
  • Secures voluntary short-term (1 to 3 day) career exploration experiences (i.e. job shadowing opportunities, informational interviews, site tours, etc.) for each participant
  • Coaches and motivates participants during their career exploration activities
  • Assists with the development of job search tools in English and French
  • Develops and maintains relationships with French-language or bilingual employers to ensure positive work placement experiences for participants in their areas of choice
  • Develops and maintains accurate documentation related to placements

Other

  • Coordinates placements with wage subsidies for a small number of participants with needs, if budget permits
  • Provides supports such as tokens for transportation and equipment needed while job shadowing (hard hat, boots, etc.)
  • Attends monthly conference calls with Ministry of Education

Qualifications / Skills Required:

  • University degree
  • Must be fully bilingual (English and French)
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in employment, youth counselling or related social services fields
  • Career/vocational counselling/placement experience with youth considered a strong asset
  • Experience facilitating workshops
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Creative problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Strong networking skills with employers, schools and community partners
  • Knowledge of local labour market and job search strategies and techniques
  • Must be willing to travel; a valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable vehicle is an asset
  • Flexible approach to work to ensure that all requirements of the program are met
