Position Purpose

This position will take a lead role in providing a full spectrum of Human Resources support services to all departments and clients within the AMS in the areas of: employee and labour relations, training and development, orientations, performance management, compensation, recruitment and other special projects.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance utilizing HR best practices to all staff regarding employee relations issues while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality
  • Coaches managers on the process of progressive discipline ensuring compliance with HR policies, procedures and relevant employment legislation
  • Provides guidance to managers related to labour relations issues, including but not limited to grievances and union postings
  • Administers the hourly performance management process: ensuring accurate applications of increases, identifying and resolving exceptions, flagging issues for escalation and fielding questions
  • Provides training and development for staff by developing relevant and instructional content through, applying ad hoc coaching, and structured facilitation sessions
  • Oversees full-cycle application for external funding sources for both HR and other departmental roles
  • Coordinates, onboarding/de-boarding process and facilitates new hire design and implementation
  • Updates necessary HR policies and procedures documents, including student and staff handbooks and applies them as required
  • Assist in preparation for Union Bargaining and attend Bargaining strategy sessions when required
  • Plans and leads relevant HR and team building events to promote inclusivity
  • Update and maintain all employee files and databases
  • Be an active participant of the Health and Safety, Social and other required committees as necessary
  • Prepares employment letters, correspondence, responses to relevant external bodies
  • Create HR reports, maintain and report on key HR Metrics for management upon request
  • Prepare content for any related HR publications
  • Work in collaboration with other HR team members on various projects and initiatives such as:
  • Strategic Planning
  • Recruiting and Retention
  • Training & Development
  • Employee Relations
  • Employee Benefits
  • Health & Wellness
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree, diploma , or certificate with a focus on Human Resource Management or relevant equivalent
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of recent, relevant human resources or related working experience
  • A minimum 1-2 years of recent, related experience working in a unionized or mixed environment with demonstrated experience resolving grievances, conducting investigations, and interpreting and applying collective agreement language.
  • Demonstrated ability building strong working relationships and credibility with all levels of employees
  • Strong project management skills with an understanding and ability to work with urgent and fluctuating deadlines
  • Ability to effectively manage HR caseloads in a timely manner
  • Understands urgency and when to escalate issues for further discussion
  • Ability to multi-task with strong organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Ability to develop and monitor project timelines and meet deadlines
  • Ability to be flexible and anticipate changes ahead of time
  • Exceptional customer service ethic
  • Strong attention to detail, strong oral/writing proficiency, excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Confidence and articulate language skills (English is mandatory)
  • Strong work ethic, a high respect and understanding of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Understanding of basic employment laws (Human Rights, Employment Standards Act, etc) is required
  • Experience working with youth is considered an asset
