This permanent part-time, (average 8hrs/week) position supports an individual with a developmental disability to access meaningful daytime activities in the community, implementing the philosophy and values of Communitas. The Community Support Worker is responsible to provide guidance, support and teaching in all areas of living. Shifts are:

  • Thurs 1pm-5pm, Fri 3pm-7pm

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Work together with manager and supported individual to creatively design options based on individual’s preference and suitability
  • Liaise with primary caregiver on a regular basis
  • Provide transportation to and from community functions
  • Explore activities that will develop new friendships
  • Provide support in maintaining new relationships
  • Provide ongoing life skills training in community to further independence
  • Be a role model for supported individual, reflecting strong moral and ethical standards, positive attitude and healthy work ethic
  • Advocate on behalf of the supported individual whenever necessary
  • Be available to attend team meetings as required
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • Community Support Worker certificate or approved equivalent
  • Previous Community Inclusion experience is an asset
  • Ability to relate to families and caregivers
  • Ability to relate supportively to a person with developmental disabilities
  • A philosophy of service that is in line with Communitas’ Vision, Mission and Values
  • Familiar with and able to implement “Spirit of Gentleness” principles
  • Ability to take initiative with creativity
  • Excellent team work skills as well as being able to work independently without supervision
  • Ability to network with other agencies
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Possession of a vehicle for transportation
  • Possession of a valid Class 4 BC driver’s license (restricted)
  • Possession of a valid Emergency First Aid Certificate with CPR (must maintain valid certification)
