Background:

Project Journey is a program geared to prevent and reduce youth crime and antisocial behaviours among Indigenous youth, between the ages of 6-18 in Pikangikum First Nation. Project Journey operates in partnership with the Pikangikum Education Authority in order to deliver innovative and engaging youth programming which focuses on leadership and life skill development; programming includes the following:

  • Community-oriented service learning
  • Outdoor experiential activities, adventure camps and treks
  • Classroom based problem-solving activities
  • Arts, culture and music
  • Police Athletic League
  • Project Venture, a strength-based positive youth development curriculum, utilizing an experiential learning approach
  • Family and connection building

Project Journey’s community oriented service learning model builds leadership and capacity within youth in Pikangikum First Nation, and increases attachment to community. Staff works with youth to plan, implement, and debrief in specific ways that use the experiences as life metaphors.

Job Summary:

Project Journey is searching for a dynamic individual to join our team. Reporting directly to the Project Coordinator, the  Project Journey Teacher will be responsible to deliver the Project Venture curriculum and support Project Journey youth programming in Pikangikum First Nation. Will be employed by Pikangikum Education Authority, with direct reporting responsibility to Project Journey. The role requires the Project Venture teacher to live in Pikangikum First Nation.

Responsibilities:

 

Project Venture curriculum and class delivery

  • Deliver prescribed Project Venture curriculum
  • Ensure daily lesson plans are reflective of local culture and adapted to available resources
  • Create resources that will be used within the classroom
  • Record adaptations of curriculum for future programming

   

Youth program facilitation and delivery

  • Work closely with Project Journey team in the planning and delivery of special events, programs, and activities on evenings and weekends
  • Working in partnership with community organizations to deliver community events

 

Reporting, scheduling and social media

  • Support the collection of evaluation data
  • Accurately capturing and reporting on Project Journey activities
  • Support rewards and recognition ceremonies
  • Maintaining monthly and weekly schedules to inform students, parents and community members of weekly events and special events.

Desired qualifications, experience and skills:

 

  • Post secondary education or equivalent work experience in the following areas: Indigenous learning, outdoor recreation and education, education, experiential learning, community development, and/or political science.
  • Ontario College of Teacher certification or equivalent
  • Applicants with background in delivery of experiential learning will be strongly considered
  • Classroom teaching experience required
  • Strong planning and coordination skills
  • Experience and interest in outdoor activities
  • Experience working with Indigenous groups
  • Risk management and classroom management skills
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Highly motivated and committed to project success
  • Good team work ethic and capable of working independently
  • Able to work under pressure
