Summer Student (35 Hours/ Week)

Full-Time Summer Position – 10 Weeks Duration

STUDENT ROLE:

 

An Information Technology Assistant (Student) is expected to work in unison with the Job Skills Team, in the deployment of Job Skills’ strategic priorities and vision, which have been designed to enhance the organization’s ability to meet and exceed its objectives.  This position will report to the Manager, Information Technology.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

The successful candidate (Student) will meet the following criteria:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Must have been registered as full-time Student in the previous academic year
  • Must intend to return to school on a full-time basis, in the next academic year (September 2018)
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* for the duration of the employment and,
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

 

*Foreign Students are not eligible

 

Students must also have the following qualifications/skills:

  • Be enrolled in either a College and/or University level program, majoring in one of the following programs:
    • Computer Science
    • General Science
    • Business Administration
    • General Arts
  • Have excellent communication skills (written, verbal)
  • Have excellent customer services skills with both internal and external customers
  • Have superior organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task, in a fast-paced environment

 

GENERAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

The Information Technology Assistant (Student) is based at the Job Skills’ Head Office location, in Newmarket, Ontario. 

 

This position will support the Information Technology Department in Newmarket and will also provide IT support to the various Job Skills’ regional sites, located in the Brampton, Keswick, Markham and Newmarket areas, as well as the Welcome Centre Immigrant Services location operated by Job Skills, as needed. Travel to the individual Job Skills’ offices will be on an “as required” basis.

 

The Information Technology Assistant (Student) will be responsible for the following learning objectives and job tasks:

 

System Administration

 

  • Configure and deploy desktops, laptops and servers.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software problems.
  • Update Job Skills’ IT equipment documentation.
  • Analyze system logs and identify potential issues with computer systems.
  • Act as a resource person, solving problems for clients in the Resource/Information area.
  • Assist the IT Administrator with software deployment, data backup and disaster recovery system management.
  • Assist with maintenance and security testing for the agency’s network as per industry standards.

 

 

Communication

 

  • Through the development of a communication strategy, s/he ensures that the IT Administrator is kept aware of critical issues and weekly activities.
  • Maintains a working relationship with all members of the Job Skills’ organization.
  • Maintains a consistent and professional work atmosphere for staff and clients.

 

Special Projects

 

  • Assist the IT Staff in deploying software across Job Skills office computers using new automated technologies and update and maintain company’s IT Asset Management database by analyzing the organization’s current hardware devices deployment.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
