Call for applications: micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) development research


Position Description


The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and practitioners. To this end, it is offering a full-time, six-month Research Assistant position for applicants interested to work on the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership project focusing on micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) growth in developing APEC economies. Applicants should be legally able to work in Canada and completed a graduate level degree program. The successful applicant will be notified in July 2018.


The project is an initiative of APF Canada and funded by the Government of Canada. The objective of the Project is to build the potential of MSMEs in developing APEC economies to foster sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.


Successful applicants will have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Experience in research related to micro, small and medium enterprise development in Asia and South America;
  • Knowledge of Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, or Peru an asset
  • Knowledge of Spanish an asset
  • Demonstrated interest in contemporary Canada-Asia relations, including policy, trade and entrepreneurial issues; and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including strong MS Excel skills) and social media.

Benefits to the Research Assistant


The Research Assistant will work under the mentorship of the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership Program Manager, and will engage in two types of activities:

  • Working with the APF’s Program Manager in conducting quantitative and qualitative research important to Canada’s micro, small and medium enterprise APEC agenda;
  • Other ad-hoc project tasks.



Applicants should be legally able to work in Canada and completed a graduate level degree. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.


The applicant’s degree does not have to be based in Canada.


The successful applicant will ideally work out of APF Canada’s head office in downtown Vancouver during regular office hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm); and, will be responsible for producing:

  • Analysis of MSME resources in focus economies for toolkit creation,
  • Quantitative analysis of currently available MSME data for research requests,
  • Analysis of survey data and drafting of a survey reports,
  • Creation of presentations for meetings, conference, and general outreach,
  • Assist in reporting requirements for the project.

Start/End Dates


The position will run from approximately July 16th, 2018 to January 31, 2019, with the possibility of extension.

  • 1-page cover letter detailing the applicant’s research interests, career interests and goals and why they are interested in researching MSMEs;
  • A short writing sample (no more than 5 pages double-spaced in English);
  • Copy of applicant’s university transcript (scanned or electronic copies are acceptable);
  • Name, title and contact information (email and phone number) for one academic or professional reference.
  • References will be contacted only if the applicant is short-listed for the fellowship.
