The DTES Neighbourhood House is seeking a motivated individual to continue an inclusive governance and community leadership project called Let's Speak Up!. This project aims to reduce the barriers community members face when choosing to be engaged on the committees and boards of directors that make decisions on their behalf. This project is underscored by the belief that ingrained power structures and exhausted service delivery models can shift by representing and valuing more DTES residents and their lived experience of poverty. Also central to this project is the understanding that current boards must increase their capacity to welcome local voices and that it is not simply residents who must meet their expectations regarding a board members' qualifications, abilities and resources.
Let's Speak Up! is in its second of three years of funding from the Vancouver Foundation and the City of Vancouver and needs a coordinator than can expand upon and implement a number of project components developed in the first year.

Title: Leadership Development Coordinator
Compensation: $19-22 per hour depending on experience
Hours: 35 hours per week with a flexible schedule
Contract: 6 months with option to renew if third year project funding secured

Responsibilities
• Review Year 1 project components and relevant literature
• Refine and build on existing project components
• Refine project structure and operating strategy
• Supervise one day of Community Drop-in and engage the broader community in a range of capacity development opportunities
• Coordinate a public panel discussion
• Draft a plan for developing a Community Charter for Inclusive Governance
• Engage with existing project participants and continue outreach to prospective participants
• Coordinate and facilitate all project meetings and workshops
• Write and distribute a quarterly newsletter
• Maintain Let's Speak Up! section of the DTES NH website
• Work with Neighbourhood House staff on project strategy and progression
Qualifications
• Proven ability to build relationships and coordinate, motivate and lead teams
• A desire to understand the cultural, economic, and political barriers to inclusive governance
• Strong presentation and written communication skills, including multi-level literacy
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to remain focused on the big picture
• Listening and conflict resolution skills
• High level of self-initiative
• Strong knowledge of empowerment tools for vulnerable populations
• Experience working or volunteering in the DTES with knowledge of local service agencies
• Experience working or volunteering with marginalized populations
• Basic graphic design skills
• Familiarity with Office 365, Word Press, InDesign
Background and education
A background in sustainable community development, community economic development, social work, social planning, or urban planning would be beneficial to this position. However, all applicants with demonstrated capacity to take on this role will be considered.
Experience on a Board of Directors or committee is a strong asset.
