The YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth is hiring a General Manager to provide leadership in the planning, opening, and operations of our John W. Lindsay YMCA.


The John W. Lindsay YMCA, scheduled to open its doors in late 2019, will be a 70,000 sf. Health, fitness, and aquatic facility.  Facility amenities will include: approximately 12,000 sf. of conditioning space over two floors, 4 exercise studios, full size gymnasium, indoor walking track, natatorium consisting of a 6 lane-25 m pool, large hydrotherapy pool and a teaching pool with a moveable floor, community meeting room, child & family centre and 5 locker rooms.  Located at a prominent corner in downtown Halifax, the John W. Lindsay YMCA is projected to serve between 6,500-8,000 members annually with thousands more participating in programs and accessing community meeting spaces.  You can be part of it from square one!


The Opportunity

As General Manager you will play a critical role in the lead up to the opening of the new John W. Lindsay YMCA.  This position will be hired 12-14 months prior to opening and, in reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the General Manager will be a key member of the operational readiness team.


Prior to opening you will:

  • Lead such pre-opening initiatives as budget development, membership drives, hiring and onboarding of staff and volunteers, business planning, facility fit-up, and technology readiness.
  • Work to liaise and develop positive internal relationships and build external relationships with organizations and community members to ensure that the centre is established as a responsive, relevant community partner.
  • Develop the YMCA’s program delivery and partnership model, operational processes and standards.


Upon opening you will:

  • Support membership growth and retention by ensuring that the YMCA is delivering on excellent member service by identifying and responding to the needs of members, participants, and partners.
  • Provide leadership to the staff team in all operational areas, including volunteers. Ensure that operational processes, practices and procedures are being successfully implemented on an on-going basis.
  • Ensure the safety and security of Centre participants, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy and values-based management of financial assistance programs.
  • Ensure sound fiduciary and administrative practices to support the on-going sustainability of the centre including budgeting and cost controls.
  • Represent the YMCA as a partner in the mixed-use development and as owner representative for the condominium association.

 You Bring

As a social connector and dynamic leader, you bring:

  • A professional, yet relationship-based and service oriented approach
  • Post-secondary degree in a related field (i.e. Recreation Management, General Management, Health/Wellness, etc.)
  • 5-7 years in program or general management; YMCA management experience an asset
  • Proven track record of success in opening a recreation facility
  • Proven track record of managing a large staff team, multiple departments and a diverse complement of programs within a diverse association
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with internal and external stakeholders and achieve/report against aligned objectives. Proven experience in management of partnerships is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a model for programs and services based on community needs
  • Demonstrated business and financial acumen
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills and ability to establish rapport
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours as required
  • Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and proof of valid First Aid and CPR training. Employees will be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training
