Ottawa ACORN is looking for motivated individuals interested in learning how to be a benefits centre coordinator. No experience required and thorough training provided.

Since 2004 ACORN staff organizers have been helping organize communities and secure important victories for low-to-moderate income communities at the local, provincial and national levels. Victories like regulating payday loan companies, a discounted bus pass for low income people in Ottawa, winning millions of dollars worth of repairs for dilapidated apartment buildings, and many more.

Ottawa ACORN is made up of over 28,000 low- and moderate-income member families, in 7 local chapters throughout the city. ACORN is a union in the community. Like any union our members pay membership dues so that they can have a sustainable independent organization to fight for their interest. Part of everyone's job at ACORN is to work to increase our membership and retain out independence.

Positions available:

The student will be responsible for the coordination of Ottawa ACORN’s benefit centre. This involves direct community outreach in low and moderate income neighborhoods, coordinating with staff and volunteers, and connecting community members to unrealized financial benefits.

30 hours a week are available to conduct the following tasks:

-assisting low income families in our clinic to register for financial credits, subsidies, and filing for a variety of government programs

-helping with reception for these programs such as setting up appointments, screening for benefits, and helping with program administration

-assisting with outreach to the community, to allied organizations with similar client base, and the public about programs they may be eligible for through door-to-door and phone outreach

-training volunteers to help assist low income families for these programs, some assistance in managing volunteers and recruiting new volunteers

Ideal Candidates Are:

-Leaders who are willing to work independently in a grassroots setting

- Must be a full-time student for the upcoming fall semester and had been enrolled in full-time studies in the previous academic year

-Willing to handle challenging and rewarding work to help our membership access financial entitlements that they qualify for but are not currently receiving

-Must be willing to work field hours between 12PM and 9PM as we organize predominately when many people are at home
