Position Title:  Communications Coordinator

Start Date: July 2018 (depending on availability)

Annual Salary: $52,000

Reports To: Director of Talent and Innovation

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours/week

Location: Lawrence Square Mall

 

North York Community House (“NYCH”) is a dynamic organization that has been working with individuals, groups and neighbourhoods to address the issues that are of concern to them for over 26 years. From reducing isolation for newcomers and providing support to new parents, to bringing together residents to strengthen their communities, our goal is to provide the support people need today, in order for them to succeed tomorrow.

 

The Communications Coordinator assists in the development, and leads the implementation, of NYCH’s communications plan, including social media initiatives, internal and external communications, development of collateral material, and media relations. This position ensures consistent, high quality communications across the organization and externally, helping to raise NYCH’s profile and engage diverse stakeholder groups in the work of the organization.

 

Main responsibilities:

Overall coordination and expansion of communications initiatives across NYCH

  • Leads the design of all branded material, including promotional and informational collateral, iconography, and reports, in order ensure a consistent visual style
  • Uses videos and photographs produced through NYCH's programs, and produces other video content with agency-wide messaging
  • Works with supervisor in developing strategies, policies and guidelines around internal and external communications
  • Builds content calendar with managers and staff, and reviews quarterly to measure progress, and adapt as necessary to achieve best results
  • Supports fundraising initiatives through development of success stories, promotional materials and contributions to funder reports
  • Ensures communications policies and procedures are maintained and compliant with all new legislation and best practices around privacy, accessibility, use of technology and platforms, etc.
  • Provides monthly reports on progress of initiatives, with analysis and recommendations for improvement

Social media and website support

  • Updates social media sites, blog and NYCH newsletter on a timely basis by developing (designing and writing) content, as well as curating and editing content generated by board, management, staff, volunteers and clients/participants
  • Provides regular updates to website content, and develops and implements recommendations regarding changes to look and function of website
  • Uses appropriate insight tools to track NYCH’s online presence
  • Researches and identifies new social media tools, trends and issues and makes recommendations regarding upgrades and implementation

External/media relations

  • Develops and maintains relationships with contacts from a variety of media (traditional, online, ethno-cultural)
  • Supports event planning through the development of outreach and promotional strategies
  • Develops and pitches stories regarding NYCH and/or community issues, events
  • Provides media relations training and support to management/staff/volunteers

Internal Communications and Administration

  • Organizes and facilitates training for staff and volunteers on use of social media, developing strong content, using key messages, etc.
  • Updates templates for flyers and other printed materials, and ensures consistent use by staff
  • Helps staff with basic support and troubleshooting around using web-based solutions and other communication tools
  • Produces and submits reports to supervisor, management and board as required
  • Trains and supervises placement students and volunteers                                                                                     

  

Required Qualifications:

Education

The minimum level of education required is a university degree in communications, marketing, or a related field.

 

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum two years’ experience in a mid-level communications position, preferably at least one within a non-profit setting
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and coordinating traditional and social media and web-based communications campaigns
  • Excellent written communication skills, and experience developing copy for online and hard copy such as websites, social media platforms, presentations, staff training and procedures
  • Experience engaging online and traditional media to raise profile, highlight events, and address key issues
  • Strong ability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, professional associations, corporate partners, media, as well as with other community organizations
  • Effective verbal communication skills – able to deliver key messages with different stakeholder groups; engage and support staff and volunteers; constructively deliver and receive critical feedback
  • Excellent design skills (online and print collateral, brand usage); experience using InDesign, Illustrator, Publisher and Premiere
  • Able to adapt to changing working conditions, program requirements and client needs

Other Requirements:

Work schedule will be determined with supervisor based on program needs. This position will require some evening/weekend work, and travel within the GTA.  Responsible for carrying/caring for a laptop and cell phone. A police reference check (including vulnerable sector screening) is required.
