The Halifax Association for Community Living (HACL) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization serving adults, youth, and children with intellectual disabilities and their families in the Halifax Regional Municipality. HACL’s Circle of Support program recognizes that people with intellectual disabilities and their family caregivers have talent, insight, skills, and experiences to share. Through the Circle of Support peer support program, people with lived experience support their peers through advice, support, empathy, resources, and hope.

 

Position Summary

The Peer Support Coordinator oversees all aspects of the Circle of Support Program, including training, outreach, referrals, group facilitation, and support.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Recruit, screen and select a group of peer mentors
  • Coordinate peer support training
  • Screen participants
  • Monitor and support peer mentors to ensure success
  • Assist in facilitating support groups
  • Liaise with community, education, and government partners
  • Plan and deliver community information sessions
  • Produce evaluation reports
  • Assist Program Director with program planning, evaluation, and other tasks as required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary education in social or human services, or equivalent experience
  • Self-directed, with an ability to work independently and as an effective team member
  • Ability to supervise and provide direction for volunteers/peer mentors
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing workloads
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate sound time management and dependability
  • Demonstrated ability in assessment and crisis intervention skills, and individual, family and group counselling skills Computer literacy, including social media.
  • Experience of delivering training, presentations and facilitating workshops

It will be considered an asset if:

  • You have knowledge and skill in case management and advocacy for persons with disabilities
  • You have knowledge and skill in peer support (Peer Support Certification or training)
  • You have knowledge and skill in family systems and youth/family/community issues
