Job Description

 

SHIP is a multi service agency providing housing and services for people with specialized needs.  Our progressive youth and community initiative addresses transitional housing and community related supports and services.  The program is located in Mississauga and incorporates both housing and a community center. The housing component is for homeless youth between the ages of 16-30 and the community center serves residents and the surrounding neighbourhood.  

 

Reporting to the Program Manager, we are currently seeking an energetic, enthusiastic and committed individual for the following position:

 

Peel Youth Village - Youth Specialist

 (Full time Bargaining Unit)

 

Reports To: Program Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Working in partnership with various community agencies to coordinate support services for youth
  • Providing specialized case management and community outreach
  • Ensuring a clean, safe and secure environment
  • Acting as a role model and facilitating the client’s physical, emotional and intellectual growth and development
  • Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of the client’s plan of residency
  • Providing individual and group counselling/support to clients
  • Responsible for client/resident safety

Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelors level Degree in a Social Services field and / or an Addiction Counseling Certificate along with at least two years related experience in an allied health field.
  • Specific training in addictions assessment and treatment.
  • Experience in working with youth and / or the homeless population.
  • Effective decision making skills and ability to assess a comprehensive range of variables to be able to interpret, analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of clients and is comfortable with the self -help role.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi service team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Possesses the personal qualities and attitudes that respect and maintain the dignity and individuality of the residents and their families.
  • Understands and is able to integrate a philosophy of client-centred care into daily responsibilities
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s Mission and Values
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and the ability to support a diverse client population are essential.
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity.
  • Knowledge and experience with GAIN-SS and ADAT tools is preferred.
  • ASIST training is preferred.
  • Must be certified in CPI, CPR and First Aid.
  • A valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and a vehicle with adequate insurance coverage are also required.
  • Bilingualism is encouraged.

This is a full time bargaining unit position working 37.5 hours per week.

This position will be required to work shifts.
