Are you a supportive, open-minded and calm human services professional? Do you have a passion for helping youth and families and providing a safe environment for them? Would you enjoy collaborating with a multl-disciplinary team?

 

In partnership with Children’s Services Indigenous Services Office (IS), Mahmawi-atoskiwin works alongside individuals and their families to create a Family Wellness Team.  The program is an alliance of three agencies:  Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary, Enviros and Pathways Community Service Association. Mahmawi-atoskiwin staff engage with families to address the concerns that brought them to involvement with Children’s Services. We do this by connecting children and families with Indigenous culture and ceremonies, enhancing family wellbeing and safety, and reuniting children with family or into an alternate living situation.

 

Working through a model that is based on traditional Indigenous teachings and western practice, the Mahmawi-atoskiwin program works alongside individuals and their family to create a Family Wellness Team.

 

As a Family Wellness Partner with Mahmawi-atoskiwin, a typical day might include:

  • Supporting families during their involvement with CS in the home and community
  • Build parental capacity, provide crisis management and safety plan with families and CS.
  • Evaluate family needs and support families in meeting them
  • Willingness to learn about, participate in and embed ceremony and incorporate traditional ways of meeting needs in services. This may include meeting in Circle, with Elders, opening with a smudge and prayer, accessing a cultural resources specialist
  • Establishing positive relationships with families and youth, advocating on behalf of families (where needed)
  • For families with children in care, FWP’s assist with driving and supporting visits between children and their parents
  • Provide on-call support to families on a rotation basis (approx. once per quarter), and driving families to sweat lodges (approx. once per quarter)
  • Collaborate with other members of the team including families, colleagues, partners
  • Ensure all documentation requirements including reporting is completed timeously
  • Ensure outcomes, assessments, service plans etc. are current and up to date
  • Contributes to a positive, supportive and rewarding work environment
  • Work a flexible schedule including some evenings to meet the needs of the families

You Have:

  • Diploma or Degree in Human Services preferred or a related degree with experience.
  • Minimum three years’ experience with In-home Support and family work
  • Knowledge of Child and Family Services and child development 
  • Previous work with Indigenous Families is an asset
  • Understands the impact of intergenerational trauma, uses a trauma-informed approach to service delivery
  • Strong leadership, engagement and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Problem solving, organizing, planning & analytical skills
  • Qualities and characteristics essential to working with people affected by trauma including empathy, compassion, self-awareness, flexibility, good listening skills, self-care, comfort with the unknown.
  • Proficient computer knowledge of Microsoft Office Current First Aid and CPR
  • Clear security clearances*
  • Use of a reliable vehicle with $1,000,000 liability, permission to carry passengers and business coverage on the vehicle.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driver’s abstract with minimal demerits
