POSITION DESCRIPTION

Avenue 15 provides youth experiencing homelessness with temporary shelter and basic needs, as well as a comprehensive support system to assist them in reuniting with their families or finding alternative living arrangements. Avenue 15 provides 2 programs (Link & Launch) to support youth with the opportunities to gain the skills and stability to reunify with family or be successful in other living arrangements.

 

Reporting to the Program Coordinators of Avenue 15, the Summer Recreation Connector position provides a great learning experience for post-secondary students looking to explore the human services field.  The Summer Recreation Connector will be implementing meaningful opportunities for the youth at Safe House.  The Summer Recreation Connector will ensure that the program and services provided are relevant to the needs of the clients and that all shelter components are effectively integrated with other BGCC programs and are consistent with the mission, values, vision, and business plan of the agency. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implements routines and activities to provide a safe milieu that fosters resolution to the crisis the youth is experiencing 
  • Provides support to youth in the program and assists youth in developing and implementing a goal plan, including connecting youth with appropriate resources
  • Encourage and assist child/youth to develop skills needed to attain higher levels of functioning by helping them to set and achieve their goals
  • Assists children/youth in developing problem solving, conflict resolution and communication skills. 
  • Ensuring all basic needs and programming expectations are being fulfilled while fostering personal growth and development
  • Manages crisis situations effectively using problem solving and de-escalation skills
  • Assist residents in learning life skills, such as cleaning, laundry, meal planning and preparation, shopping, budgeting and yard work
  • Documentation  of case notes and critical incidents
  • Recognizes the importance of natural supports in each youth’s life and therefore ensures the inclusion of appropriate natural supports in case planning whenever possible  
  • Provide and organize weekly programs such as recreation and life skills 
  • Participation in professional meetings
  • Recreation programming for youth: on site and in the community that promote healthy lifestyles and choices
  • Acts as a liaison as needed between families, social workers, school representatives, doctors and other professionals involved with the child/youth
  • Trainings as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be enrolled in full time post-secondary studies in the fall
  • Current certification for First Aid and CPR 
  • Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector search and Intervention Record Check

Please Note: Successful candidates will complete criminal record check and child intervention record check at the time of new hire paperwork.  A criminal record check and child intervention record check dated within 6 months of the interview date will also be accepted.
