Peer Education Coach

Location:  Eleanor’s House, Calgary

8 week contract for summer students

 

Are you a supportive, open-minded and calm student looking to gain experience in youth work? Do you have a passion for helping vulnerable youth and providing a safe environment for them? Would you enjoy collaborating with a multl-disciplinary team?

 

Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary is a leading provider of quality programs to children and youth, with a $20 million dollar operating budget, that supports the healthy physical, educational and social development for 20,000 young people and their families each year.

 

Eleanor’s House is a Voluntary Residential Transitional Community-Based program located in Calgary that provides shelter and support to young people who are at-risk of or involved in sexual exploitation.  The program serves males and females between the ages of 13 and 17 who are at-risk of or who are currently involved in sexual exploitation. Referrals are made through Calgary Region Child and Family Services.

 

As a Peer Education Coach, a typical day might include:

  • Ensuring youth safety with a strong focus on self- esteem, healthy relationships, financial literacy and community engagement through employment, recreation and volunteer opportunities.
  • Creating and maintaining a positive, supportive, strength based and rewarding work environment.
  • Taking an active role in providing mentorship to adolescents.
  • Providing peer mentorship while ensuring a safe and supportive environment for youth
  • Assisting youth in becoming more familiar with aspects pertaining to safe and healthy choices with a focus on fostering personal growth and development.
  • Assisting the youth in becoming more familiar with community resources and developing positive community relationships
  • Supporting the youth in becoming more familiar with culturally appropriate formal and informal supports within their community.
  • Supporting continuous community research on best practices to ensure paramount outcomes for youth and families
  • Ensuring that the Peer Education Coaching Program fosters individual living skills, social skills and group interactions with the youth.
  • Managing crisis situations effectively using problem solving and de-escalation skills.
  • Facilitating weekly educational programming for youth.
  • Ensuring that all documentation regarding the youth is completed on their present shift so the information regarding the youth is conveyed to the entire team.

You Have:

  • Attending post-secondary studies in the Human Services field
  • Must have been enrolled in full-time studies during the previous school year and returning to full-time studies in September 2018
  • Experience working with at-risk youth is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR certification
  • A  current Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector search and Child Welfare Intervention check prior to starting work*

*If the checks are older than 6 months, successful applicants will begin this process during new hire paperwork.
