In collaboration with the Executive Director, directs the financial affairs of the organization and provides financial analysis of operations based on interim, monthly and annual financial statements. The Director is responsible for the company’s financial plans and policies, its accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with funders, government and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports in accordance with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).



  1. Develop, analyze, and interpret statistical and accounting information to assess results of operations.
  2. Assist the Executive Director in establishing major economic objectives and policies for the company.
  3. Manage the Finance department ensuring financial reports are prepared accurately and timely, and in accordance with the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  4. Coordinate and direct preparation of the budget and financial forecast based on economic objectives. Institute other planning and control tools and procedures.
  5. Design and update chart of accounts. GL, codes and financial reporting formats considering new programs and organizational changes.
  6. Manage cashflow, bank accounts, operating credit line, credit cards, investments and mortgage; Maintain close relationship with the banks.
  7. Handle GST, charity return, property tax exemption filing, society return and submission of required documents.
  8. Institute internal control system in purchasing, accounts payable, payroll, deferred revenue, grant, capital asset expenditure, donation-in-kind, allocation of expenses, proper charging of donations and receipts, amortization of capital asset, write-off of capital assets, deferred capital asset contribution, etc.
  9. Oversee payroll to ensure compliance with CRA, Alberta, WCB and Service Canada Requirements.
  10. Handle periodic and interim audits from external accountant/auditor (MNP), CRA general audits, GST audit, payroll audit and special audits from other government agencies and community-based organizations from specific programs.
  11. Analyze variance reports (e.g. AHUA Shelters contract variance, Homeward Trust program, cost-center financial report, etc.); Determine compliances with grant agreements and funding contracts.
  12. Review grant contracts and funding agreements to ensure fair financial clause and compliance with the funder’s specifications.
  13. Maintain and update accounting system and software. Research, recommend and coordinate implementation of software application.
  14. Review and approve all payments whether under payables, payroll, electronic fund transfer (EFT).
  15. Coordinate with MNP and Audit Committee on interim and year-end audit schedules, meetings, and requirements.
  16. Analyze major recurring expenses of departments or cost-centers (salaries and wages, food, utilities, insurance, etc.) and discuss with respective department managers ways and means to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  17. Maintain and reconcile with GL capital asset continuity schedule, track acquisition and disposal of capital asset, record accumulated amortization and loss/gain on disposed or written-off asset and record amortization.
  18. Review and approve monthly and yearly adjusting journal entries, bank reconciliation balances and other income/receipts accounts.
  19. Assist operations managers if they have concerns on their departments operating expenses or any budget, finance or goal issues; Assist in applying lean organizations and value-for-money- principles.
  20. Train, mentor and guide Finance staff to create a productive and happy team.



  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce major in Accounting required;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Sage 300
