Summer Student (35 Hours/ Week)

Full-Time Summer Position – 10-12 Weeks Duration

STUDENT ROLE:

 

A Youth Outreach Intern (Student) is expected to work in unison with the Job Skills’ Team, in the deployment of Job Skills’ strategic priorities and vision, which have been designed to enhance the organization’s ability to meet and exceed its objectives. This position will report to the Manager, Youth Job Connection Program and indirectly to the Director, Employment Services and Programs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

The successful candidate (Student) will meet the following criteria:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment,
  • Must have been registered as full-time Student in the preceding academic year,
  • Must intend to return to school on a full-time basis, in the next academic year (September 2018),
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* for the duration of the employment, and
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

*Foreign Students are not eligible

 

Students must also have the following qualifications/skills:

  • Excellent English communication skills (written, verbal)
  • Be enrolled in either a College and/or University level program, majoring in one of the following programs:
    • Career and Work Counseling
    • Social Work
    • Psychology
    • Social Science
    • Business Administration
  • Excellent customer services skills with both internal and external customers.
  • Previous experience working with youth or working in a youth-centered environment an asset.
  • Knowledge of dealing with youth issues (i.e. homelessness, disabilities (mental health, learning and physical), criminal justice system, youth who have not completed high school, additions, low income and youth living in rural and remote areas) an asset.
  • Superior organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle.

GENERAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Youth Outreach Intern is based at the Job Skills’ Employment Services location, in Keswick, Ontario.

 

This position will support Job Skills’ Youth Programs in Northern York Region (Youth Job Connection, Youth Job Connection Summer, Youth Job Link & Youth Entrepreneurship Program), as needed.  Travel to the individual Job Skills’ offices will be on an “as required” basis.

 

The Youth Outreach Intern (Student) will be responsible for the following learning objectives and job tasks:

  • Become familiar with Job Skills’ employment and business services mandate and objectives, through the review of available literature and meetings with staff.
  • Learn Job Skills’ general program information and be able to refer walk-in/telephone clients to appropriate community services and programs.
  • Develop and maintains a working relationship with all Job Skills’ Departments, at all Job Skills’ offices.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of youth outreach activities both on-site and throughout the community (i.e. community centers, youth centers, shopping malls, job fairs and youth shelters). Note: YOUTH are defined as Age 15 – 29 for this program.
  • Ensure that the employment site is youth-friendly.
  • Use excellent customer service skills, both on the phone and in person, dealing tactfully and effectively with partners, organizations, government agencies and the general public.
  • Conduct planned outreach activities in Northern York Region area, in co-ordination with the Employment Services team.
  • Maintain a working relationship with all members of the Job Skills’ organization.
  • Maintain a consistent and professional work atmosphere for staff and clients.
  • Attend and assist with specific promotional activities or other activities, as required.
  • Performs other duties, as required.

Communication

  • Ensure that the Program Manager is kept aware of critical issues and weekly activities.
  • Make recommendations to the Manager, Youth Job Connection, regarding the delivery of a Youth Outreach Strategy.

Special Projects

  • Work with the Marketing Department to support the development and creation of youth-oriented marketing and information tools.
  • Recommend and assist with the maintenance and updating of youth-focused resources.
  • Assist in the identification of trends affecting youth employment through formal research and observation.
  • Research jobs, events, and sends regular emails (jobs) to participants, as appropriate.
  • Participate in the planning, preparation and promotion of events.
  • Provide support to local community initiatives focused on addressing the needs of youth.
