"To end domestic abuse and violence in the lives of women and their children by supporting the shelter, A Safe Place, and impacting public policy through education and awareness".

Vision: A safe community where people are supported to reach their full potential.

Strathcona Shelter Society Ltd. (SSSLtd.) is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director based out of Sherwood Park, Alberta. This is a rewarding and challenging opportunity to oversee facility operations at A Safe Place.


To represent the SSSLtd. in the community and carry out strategic and daily operations under the direction of the Society’s Board of Directors. The Executive Director is responsible for maintaining effective day to day management of the facility and personnel and program policies in order to ensure that a high standard of quality, service and safety is maintained for the well-being of A Safe Place clients and staff.


  • Proven leadership, time management, and grant writing skills. The passion and ability to promote the Society’s work within the community through public relations. Must be able to form positive, collaborative relationships with staff, volunteers, clients and members of the community.



  • Demonstrated administrative skills, personnel management, program development, community networking and strong organizational skills.



  • A Degree in Human Services or Business Management, augmented by several years’ experience in the areas of Family Violence, crisis intervention, finances, and program administration. Other educational or background experience will be considered. Knowledge and awareness of working in a trauma informed setting is considered an asset.



  • Eligibility for membership with a professional association or regulatory body, or currently be a member in good standing.



  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset



  • Salary will be commensurate with experience and education and is negotiable based on SSSLtd. current salary grid. Extended heath and illness benefits are applicable for this position.





Executive Director Position Description

The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of A Safe Place according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director provides direction and leadership in the development and achievement of Strathcona Shelter Society Ltd.’s mission, vision and goals.


REPORTS TO: Board of Directors



1. Board Governance

Accountable for collaborating and supporting the Board of Directors in its governance role


Performance Expectations:

Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization

Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Director on all aspects of the organization's activities

Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive Director

Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate. This may be guided and reviewed according to the collective agreement in effect

-Provide technical support, organize and provide analysis of Collective Agreement. Participate in negotiations of Collective Agreement


2. Strategic Planning

  • Accountable for the development and implementation of a long term strategy and annual business plans based on outcomes developed in collaboration with funders



  • Works in collaboration with the board to implement the board strategic planning for the organization




Performance Expectations:

Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization.

  • Provides outcomes on yearly basis to funders and adjust as needed.



3. Program and Service Delivery

Accountable for the design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of programs and services

Performance Expectations:

Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its clients, Board and Funders

Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs, services and special projects

Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board and main funders


4. Human Resource Management

Accountable for the effective management of human resources including staff and volunteers according to authorized policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations

Performance Expectations:

Ensure compliance with Alberta legislation and develop Human Resource policies and practices to promote a productive, engaged workforce to deliver the operations of A Safe Place

Manage and oversee all Human Resources areas such as but not limited to; recruitment, performance management, staff development, annual reviews, succession planning and related promotions, progressive discipline, employee engagement organizational structure and termination.

  • Manage all grievances put forth by CUPE.



Ensure all staff has a job descriptions and performance evaluations on an annual basis

Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations

  • Follow collective agreement and keep inventory of areas that need changes for the next negotiation




5. Financial, Risk and Asset Management

Accountable for positive financial management and application of sound risk management processes


Performance Expectations:

Work with Accountant and the Finance Committee to prepare a comprehensive budget

Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly revenues and expenditures of the organization, reporting areas of interest and concern to Board or Director

Ensure adequate, timely and relevant financial information reporting to the Board of Directors

Ensure that the organization complies with all relevant legislation

Identify and evaluate the to the organization's people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks

Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage


6. Community and Public Relations

Accountable for a strong, positive profile of A Safe Place to relevant stakeholders

Performance Expectations:

Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization

Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization

In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization

Represents the organization at community activities to enhance the organization's community profile


7. Fundraising

  • Provide support to staff when appropriate and requested for fundraising activities.



  • Responsible for proposal writing and taking windows of opportunities for operational funding, repairs or innovative services.




Performance Expectations:

• Identify resource requirements and researching funding sources for programs of improvements.

• Establish strategies to approach funders and donors, submitting proposals and administrating fundraising records and documentation and reporting in collaboration with appropriate staff.

• Collaborate with Fund development and Fundraising Committee to achieve fundraising targets.
