Position Summary:

Outreach workers operate in pairs and provide immediate response services to at-risk youth in the Newton area and various other neighbourhoods in the City of Surrey.  This position requires an understanding of behaviours that impact at-risk youth including poverty, homelessness, youth gang issues, street entrenchment, substance misuse, FASD and mental health barriers. The successful applicant will have expertise in working with youth, experience as an outreach worker and sound judgment and initiative.  The successful applicant must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Residents, currently a full time student returning to full time study in September 2018 and between the ages of 15-30.

The Youth Outreach Worker position offers the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of issues related to at-risk and high risk youth, their needs, challenges and the various community agencies and networks that serve them.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Provide outreach services to youth in the City of Surrey; Newton and other various neighborhoods as needed.
  • Establish relationships with youth to ensure they are connected to longer term community resources.
  • Engage with and encourage youth to participate in pro-social activities in the City of Surrey by offering access passes, recreation schedules, knowledge of community agencies offering youth specific activities and workshops.
  • Attend community meetings to identify youth and their specific needs, map and locate family and community networks,and forming relationships with other service providers and agencies to ensure all information is current and relevant.

Basic Requirements: 

  • Second Year student is preferred in related post-secondary study, i.e.: Youth Justice, Youth care counsellor, Social Services, Education, Psychology, Criminology
  • Valid Criminal Record Check
  • Current Level 1 First aid certificate desired but not required
  • Computer Skills (MS Word/Excel, Internet and Email knowledge)

Dimensions of Work:

 

Work schedule will vary usually between the hours of 11a.m. – 9p.m., Monday to Friday.  There may be a need for flexibility in the event of later evening or weekend participation.  This position at times, can be quite physical involving long stretches of walking, inclement weather and carrying a full backpack.
