Organizational Overview:

Established in 2006, Kids For Turtles Environmental Education is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the delivery of habitat enhancement projects and environmental outreach programs targeting schools, community organizations, church groups, summer camps, and landowners within the region. The organization is governed by a board of directors consisting of community members with support from a dedicated team of volunteers. The group is supported by local businesses, charitable foundations, government agencies at all levels, and members of the general public. The mission of Kids For Turtles Environmental Education is to engage youth and their families in the environment so as to foster an understanding and appreciation for the world around them. By learning about species at risk and their habitats members become engaged in efforts to protect these species from threats such as invasive species and habitat degradation due to indiscriminate development and abuse. Through the delivery of the local program Kids For Turtles Environmental Education strives to work collaboratively to improve the environment in which we live for the enjoyment of future generations. Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for the care and control of turtles
    • Become familiar with biology, and impacts of priority invasive species affecting local environments – with particular focus on the issue of aquatic invasive species introductions through recreational activities surrounding Lake Simcoe;
    • Developing, coordinating and delivering education and outreach programs (including materials) to all age groups in the community to assist in both the development of invading species awareness initiatives and environmental education around turtles
    • Contacting elementary schools, churches, youth groups, summer camps and other organizations about the delivery of programs
    • Coordinate and implement a community invasive species eradication event engaging volunteers to participate
    • Provide weekly reports and updates on activities and a final report both to OFAH and KFT
    • Engage members of the public in order to recruit program volunteers and work as a team to coordinate and train volunteers
    • Assist in the coordination and implementation of organizational events
    • Contribute article to local news sources
    • Manage office duties and handling inquiries from the public
    • Keep social media sites active and up to date
    • Photo-documentation of events, projects and functions and contribute to a photo database for the organization to use in media, promotion and project research
    • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications/Aptitudes: 

  • Valid Class G or G2 Ontario Drivers License and full time access to a vehicle (mandatory)
  • Enrolled in post-secondary education an asset
  • Self-starter who has the ability to work effectively independently
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience conveying information to the public (e.g. presentations to community/contributing articles to newspapers/media publications)
  • Knowledge of computer applications, specifically MS Office and excellent keyboard skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours and perform occasional field work
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
