Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society
Region: Vancouver Island & Coastal areas Type: Negotiable / Flexible
Location: Nanaimo Salary: $24-30/hr

The Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society (NS3) is a small non-profit located on Vancouver Island. NS3’s mission is to inspire children and develop their interest in science and sustainability through hands-on learning. Reporting to the NS3 Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for upholding this mission through leadership and management of the organization, staff, and collaborators, and by developing programming, securing funding and promoting NS3 within the community. The NS3 Board of Directors is looking for someone who can take the organization to the next level through business development, fundraising and building partnerships.

NS3 offers a variety of programming including camps during school breaks, workshops for children and adults, school-based programming funded by the district which meets curricular goals, classes for home learners, drop-in/open exploration times at our Science Studio, booths at community events, and a summer outdoor education program at local parks. NS3 has a small staff with which to deliver this programming which requires that staff, including the ED, are adaptable, knowledgeable, and highly collaborative. NS3 programs are delivered with an attitude of fun – our goal is to inspire an interest in science by providing hands-on, inquiry-based learning opportunities rather than focusing on rote learning. We strive to support children’s curiosity using experimentation to promote resilience in the face of an initial failure, and to create a welcoming environment that honors the creativity and capacity of all participants.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Develop an operational plan incorporating goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization
  • Managing outreach and seasonal staff, including running hiring processes, administering payroll, updating the staff handbook and ensuring compliance with NS3 policies, working with staff to identify professional development needs and opportunities
  • Managing operation finances, including budgeting, routine banking, working with NS3’s bookkeeper, and meeting CRA requirements.
  • Grant writing, administration, and reporting
  • Fund raising through sponsorships, donations and memberships – including giving presentations, making funding pitches, and developing opportunities/incentives for members
  • Program development – this is wide-ranging including developing new programs to support NS3’s mission within the community or new activities within the framework of existing programs.
  • Ensuring quality of delivery for new and ongoing programs – this includes teaching the material to ensure familiarity, observing staff and working with them to maintain NS3’s attitude of fun and curiosity, ensuring accuracy of scientific information and maintaining NS3’s standards of excellence
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships, including with School District 68, the City of Nanaimo, Science World etc.
  • Advising the Board of Directors on operations and on steps taken to meet society goals
  • Working with the Board of Directors to continue developing NS3’s vision and goals in keeping with the mission statement and to expand the scope and reach of the organization;
  • Writing a yearly report to be disseminated to the membership, sponsors etc.
  • Occasionally assisting with outreach/education of children, families and adults
  • Represent the organization to all stakeholders to enhance the organization's community profile

  • MS or PhD in Science (Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, etc.) or Education (with a BA/BSc in the sciences)
  • Business management experience or leadership experience in a growing non-profit
  • Experience with grant writing and other fundraising activities;
  • Passion for outreach, education and science;
  • Self-motivated and conscientious person who can work independently and in teams;
  • Experience working in an educational setting;
