The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Volunteer Services Coordinator will play a vital role in the overall volunteer experience at The Mustard Seed Red Deer. This staff will be the key person overseeing the daily administrative duties of the department and the hands on facilitation as able when volunteers are present. The ideal candidate is a positive, friendly person with proven customer service and professional administrative skills. This candidate must have a desire to serve our volunteers, guests, support staff and build community among our most vulnerable citizens. The coordinator will put their excellent customer service skills to work each meal night as they host and welcome each volunteer. The Mustard Seed provides an opportunity for people from the community to volunteer and serve some of their most vulnerable neighbours and ensuring that this experience is an excellent and valuable use of their time.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Overseeing the intake of volunteers including telephone interviews, background screening, training, and placement;
  • Responding to volunteer inquiries via email and phone and in-person;
  • Host and oversee the volunteer experience on meal days: Mon, Wed & Fri evenings (subject to change)
  • Liaison with Program staff to create new long-term opportunities and to streamline existing volunteer workflows;
  • Oversee volunteer protocol and relations;
  • Create and maintain relationships with established church, school, corporate and family volunteers – help develop and maintain meal sponsor relationships with Development staff in Red Deer;  
  • Maintain systems and procedures for volunteer appreciation, development and training;
  • Guide and support staff in their supervision, evaluation and recognition of volunteers;
  • Community networking; arranging and attending community volunteer recruitment events;
  • Event Collaborating with a variety of Community partners;
  • Coordinate volunteers for signature and third party events;
  • Providing volunteers and staff with essential information regarding day to day program information;
  • Collaborate with Communications staff to develop volunteer program printed materials;
  • Consistent improvement of volunteer processes including recruitment, engagement, and retention;
  • Coordinate and host monthly information sessions, volunteer group meetings and other necessary volunteer meetings;
  • Daily maintenance of the volunteer database;
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A passion to be part of ending homelessness in Alberta
  • University Degree or equivalent work experience in a relevant field would be an asset (i.e. Human Resources, Administration, Volunteer Management, Customer Service, etc.)
  • Strong competency with computers, data management systems and experience in Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft Office programs
  • 2+ years’ experience working with volunteers
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced role that involves multi-tasking and managing a diverse workload
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong skill in written and verbal communication
  • Excellent administration, time management and organizational skills
  • Previous experience working with a marginalized population, particularly the homeless considered an asset
  • Access to own vehicle and clear driver abstract for TMS driving permissions

 

OTHER INFORMATION

  • This position is located at The Mustard Seed Red Deer
  • Maternity leave cover for 12 to 18 months in duration
  • 40 Hours weekly: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 11:30am – 8:00pm; Tuesday & Thursday 8:00am-4:30pm
  • This role will have significant people interaction, both with staff and volunteers, but will also involve considerable administrative work
  • Employment Security Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
